MG has released details of two new MG4 EV models that will go on sale in 2026. Yes, two. As well as an updated version of the familiar MG4 EV that was introduced in 2022 there’s the all-new MG4 EV Urban – an entirely new, entry-level model. It's cheaper and has a shorter range than the existing model but is actually slightly larger.
Confused? Then let us explain. Here’s everything we know so far about the 2026 MG4 EV and 2026 MG4 EV Urban.

2026 MG4 EV Urban: styling and dimensions
You only need to glance at the MG4 EV Urban to see that it’s an entirely different car to the existing MG4 EV. The two models share no exterior panels and the MG4 EV Urban has a different design language altogether, with soft curves in place of the older car’s more angular appearance. There are hints of MG’s Cyberster sports car around the front and rear lights, although the MG4 EV Urban’s tall roofline means it doesn’t look especially sporty overall.
Despite its positioning as a lower-cost alternative to the existing car, the MG4 EV Urban is actually slightly larger, being about 11cm longer, 3cm taller and 0.5cm wider.
The updated version of the MG4 EV looks almost identical, with fresh alloy wheel designs and a new, single-piece rear spoiler the only external changes.
2026 MG4 EV Urban: interior design and practicality
The interior of the MG4 EV Urban echoes its exterior, with soft curves the order of the day. As with many similar EVs, there’s a large central touchscreen, a smaller screen for the driver display and only a handful of physical buttons. There’s also a steering wheel that’s slightly squared off at the top and the bottom, and what appears to be a ‘floating’ centre console with storage space beneath it.
The updated MG4 EV has an all-new dashboard that adopts a similar look to the ‘Urban’ model, with larger screens and a much more rounded look than that of the outgoing car. MG says that it ‘offers a major technology and quality upgrade’, and we’d agree that it has a more modern, upmarket appearance.
Thanks to its larger dimensions and front-wheel drive layout, the new MG4 EV Urban is by far the more practical of the two cars. As well as a longer wheelbase it has a boot capacity of 479 litres to the older car's 363 litres, and it the Urban model has an additional 98-litre storage area under the boot floor.
2026 MG4 EV: engines and driving dynamics
The new MG4 EV Urban uses an entirely different platform to the existing car, with a front-wheel-drive – rather than rear-wheel-drive – layout. That helps to improve interior space but we’d be surprised if the Urban model was as agile and responsive as the standard MG4 EV as a result.
There are two battery options for the MG4 EV Urban. The standard version has a 43kWh unit that gives a 201-mile maximum range, while the long-range model has a 54kWh battery that gives a range of 258 miles. Neither figure is especially impressive, but it’s about average for smaller, cheaper EVs. Charging speeds aren’t anything to write home about, with a maximum of 87kW for the longer-range model.
The existing MG4 EV posts healthier stats, especially since the previous entry-level battery option has been dropped to make way for the Urban model. Now, the ‘standard’ MG4 EV offers a choice of a 64kWh or 77kWh battery pack, with a maximum range of 288-338 miles.
