Audi RS5 (2017-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Superb all-weather performance | Not the driver's car it could be |
| Practical Sportback model | Turbocharged engine is short on character |
| First-rate interior quality | Thumpy ride over poor surfaces |
Quick Summary
The Audi RS5 (2017-2025) is a fast, secure, and handsome all-rounder that delivers impressive straight-line performance with its 444bhp turbocharged V6 engine. Available as both a two-door coupe and a more practical five-door Sportback hatchback, it offers quattro all-wheel drive for superior all-weather capability. The cabin is exceptionally well-appointed with high-grade materials, intuitive MMI infotainment, and a configurable Virtual Cockpit display. With a 410-litre boot (465 litres in the Sportback) and comfortable rear seating, it balances performance with everyday practicality.
Whilst the RS5 never quite reaches the dynamic heights of the BMW M4 or the engine character of the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, it excels as a grand tourer with stability and refinement. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and responsive, and the car is civilised and comfortable in daily use. Running costs are substantial, with fuel consumption typically in the low 20s mpg when driven spiritedly, high insurance groups (42-47), and premium servicing costs. For keen drivers, rivals may prove more rewarding, but for those prioritising all-weather security and practicality, the RS5 slots seamlessly into most lives.
Best for: Buyers seeking a fast, secure, and practical performance car with all-wheel drive capability, those who value interior quality and refinement, and those considering the versatile Sportback variant.
Not ideal for: Keen drivers prioritising dynamic engagement, those seeking engine character and musicality, or budget-conscious buyers concerned with fuel economy and running costs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audi RS5 | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.3% | 4.1/5 |
| BMW 3 Series F30 | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.5% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz C-Class | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 33.1% | 4.2/5 |
| BMW M4 Coupe | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 26.6% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the RS5 if: You seek a fast, secure, and practical performance car with all-wheel drive capability, value interior quality and refinement, or desire the versatile Sportback variant.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic engagement and driver involvement, seek engine character and musicality, or are concerned with fuel economy and running costs.
Competitive Position: The Audi RS5 (2017-2025) is a compelling all-rounder in the performance coupe segment, offering quattro all-wheel drive security and a practical Sportback option that rivals cannot match. Whilst the BMW M4 and Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe may deliver sharper dynamics and more characterful engines respectively, the RS5 excels in all-weather capability, interior quality, and everyday refinement. Its turbocharged V6 prioritises efficiency and straight-line speed over musicality, making it ideal for buyers who value stability and practicality alongside performance. For keen drivers seeking ultimate dynamic reward, competitors may prove more engaging, but for those wanting a fast, secure, and civilised grand tourer, the RS5 is an excellent choice.
