BMW 2 Series Coupe (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Engaging to drive, with agile handling	Lack of a hatchback limits practicality
Smart, high-quality cabin	Feels quite large around town
Roomy inside by coupe standards	Four-door rivals are easier for passengers

Quick Summary

The BMW 2 Series Coupe is a rare breed in today's market: a compact, two-door coupe that prioritises driving enjoyment and rear-wheel-drive balance over outright practicality. The current generation is larger and more aggressively styled than its predecessor, with a bespoke platform that allows BMW to retain classic traits such as rear-wheel drive (or rear-biased all-wheel drive) and a strong emphasis on balance and handling. It sits closer to vehicles such as the Alpine A110 and Porsche 718 Cayman than most mainstream coupes, offering a distinct identity among modern performance cars.

The range spans from relatively restrained four-cylinder petrol models through to more powerful M Performance versions and the hardcore M2. By two-door standards, the 2 Series Coupe is surprisingly spacious, with a 390-litre boot and ample room for occasional rear-seat passengers or child seats. All models feature BMW's Curved Display with a 12.3-inch digital driver display and 14.9-inch touchscreen running the latest iDrive system. Fuel economy ranges from low-40s mpg for the 220i to mid-30s for the M240i, whilst all engines use a timing chain, avoiding major scheduled replacement expenses.

Best for: Drivers seeking a compact coupe with genuine everyday usability, those who value rear-wheel-drive handling and balance, and enthusiasts wanting a driver-focused alternative to four-door rivals.

Not ideal for: Buyers needing four doors for regular rear-seat passengers, those prioritising maximum practicality, or drivers concerned about higher servicing costs typical of BMW ownership.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the BMW 2 Series Coupe if: You seek a compact coupe with genuine everyday usability, value rear-wheel-drive handling and balance, or want a driver-focused alternative to four-door rivals.

Consider alternatives if: You need four doors for regular rear-seat passengers, prioritise maximum practicality, or are concerned about higher servicing costs typical of BMW ownership.

Competitive Position: The BMW 2 Series Coupe stands out in a shrinking market of compact two-door coupes, offering rear-wheel-drive balance, strong performance and genuine everyday usability. Whilst the Toyota GR86 edges ahead with a perfect expert rating and slightly higher value score, the BMW offers a more premium cabin and greater practicality. Compared with the Audi TT Mk3, the BMW delivers superior handling dynamics and a more modern infotainment system. The Ford Mustang provides charismatic old-school appeal but lacks the BMW's refinement and agility. For drivers prioritising driving enjoyment alongside usability, the BMW 2 Series Coupe remains one of the best options available.
