BMW 5 Series (2010-2016) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Exceptional all-round ability	Fairly firm ride on larger alloy wheels
Satisfying to drive and comfortable to travel in	Epic running costs of high-performance M5
The 520d hits the sweet spot for performance and economy	Not all models have split/folding rear seats

Quick Summary

The BMW 5 Series F10 (2010-2016) is an executive saloon that comes remarkably close to being the perfect all-rounder. This sixth-generation model offers exceptional refinement and is a genuine delight to drive over long distances. With generous interior space for driver and passengers, a 520-litre boot (560 litres in the Touring estate), and a comprehensive range of powerful yet efficient petrol and diesel engines, it delivers impressive performance without compromising on economy. The 520d particularly excels, offering the sweet spot between performance and fuel efficiency, achieving 60-65mpg in real-world conditions.

Build quality and reliability meet BMW's premium standards, whilst the intuitive iDrive infotainment system and well-equipped standard specification make ownership rewarding. Running costs are modest for a car of such quality, with some models attracting annual road tax as low as £30. A healthy stock of used F10 models exists on the market, making it easier to find the specification that suits your needs. Whether you prioritise comfort, performance, or practicality, the 5 Series delivers on all fronts.

Best for: Drivers seeking a refined, spacious executive saloon that combines comfort with engaging driving dynamics, business users valuing efficiency, and those wanting a premium car with reasonable running costs.

Not ideal for: Buyers on a tight budget concerned about premium parts costs, those preferring softer suspension on larger wheels, or those requiring split/folding rear seats as standard on all trims.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 5 Series if: You seek a refined, spacious executive saloon combining comfort with engaging driving dynamics, value efficiency and reasonable running costs, or desire a premium car that excels as an all-rounder.

Consider alternatives if: You are concerned about premium parts costs, prefer softer suspension characteristics, or require split/folding rear seats as standard across all trims.

Competitive Position: The BMW 5 Series F10 stands as the strongest contender in the executive saloon segment, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 expert rating. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6 offer comparable user ratings and value propositions, the 5 Series distinguishes itself through exceptional all-round ability, superior driving dynamics, and the acclaimed 520d engine that perfectly balances performance with economy. Its refinement, spaciousness, and modest running costs for a premium car make it the standout choice for discerning buyers seeking an executive saloon that truly delivers on every front.
