BMW X3 (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More fun to drive than most rivals | Sportier versions have a firm ride |
| A wide choice of efficient petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid engines | Not as able off road as a Land Rover |
| Spacious and comfortable cabin | No seven-seat option |
Quick Summary
The BMW X3 (2018-2024), known as the G01, is a compact premium SUV that blends impressive handling with stout performance, practicality and modern technology. This generation was launched in 2017 with a tweaked wheelbase making it slightly longer and more spacious than its predecessor. It features fresh styling, standard-fit triple-zone climate control, and a spacious 550-litre boot. The cabin is well-designed with excellent build quality, easy-to-understand controls, and plenty of rear passenger space.
A range of versions is offered, including petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid models, with even a high-performance BMW X3 M Competition derivative available. The X3 sets itself apart from rivals like the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Discovery Sport with superior on-road handling and engagement. The plug-in hybrid xDrive30e offers the best economy at up to 148.7mpg and 44g/km CO2 emissions, whilst the base xDrive20i and xDrive20d achieve up to 36.7mpg and 47.9mpg respectively. However, the X3 M Competition drops to 24.8mpg. VED costs are significant, with a hefty first-year rate and five-year premium for cars over £40,000, though it drops to a flat rate of £140-150 thereafter. BMW offers fixed-price servicing plans from £25 monthly.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium SUV with engaging handling, modern technology, and a spacious interior; those wanting efficient engine options including plug-in hybrid; and drivers prioritising overall package quality over specific compromises.
Not ideal for: Those needing seven-seat capability, serious off-road credentials, or two-wheel-drive efficiency; buyers seeking the comfort of a Volvo XC60 or the driving engagement of an Alfa Romeo Stelvio or Jaguar F-Pace; or those wanting a lower purchase price.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.8% | 4.5/5 |
| Porsche Macan | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.7% | 4.5/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the X3 if: You're seeking a premium SUV with engaging handling, modern technology, and a spacious interior; you want efficient engine options including plug-in hybrid; or you prioritise overall package quality.
Consider alternatives if: You need seven-seat capability, serious off-road credentials, or two-wheel-drive efficiency; you prefer the comfort of a Volvo XC60; or you want a lower purchase price.
Competitive Position: The BMW X3 (2018-2024) is a standout in the premium compact SUV market, offering superior on-road handling and engagement compared to rivals like the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. Its strength lies in the overall package: impressive driving dynamics, modern technology, spacious and comfortable cabin, and a wide choice of efficient engines including a plug-in hybrid option. Whilst the Volvo XC60 may offer greater comfort and the Land Rover Discovery Sport better off-road ability, few competitors match the X3's blend of performance, practicality, and technology. The Porsche Macan delivers thrilling driving but at a premium cost. For buyers prioritising engaging handling and a comprehensive feature set, the X3 easily justifies its place on any premium SUV shopping list.

What people say
X drive is a big advantage for me, solid BMW engineering too - and of course a decent size
Very good as good as my Range Rover but more economical
Bonnet and front bumper is covered in significant stone chips that they have tried to paint over using a slightly different colour and damage to the interior door trim - over £1,000 to repair with BMW
It is a good looking car but the insurance bracket is too high.
This is my 3rd BMW X3. Its a wonderful car for reliability, comfort and safety. Plus it really looks good too. Very comfortable and spacious interior, huge boot space. Highly recommended.
