BMW X3 (2018-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
More fun to drive than most rivals Sportier versions have a firm ride
A wide choice of efficient petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid engines Not as able off road as a Land Rover
Spacious and comfortable cabin No seven-seat option

Quick Summary

The BMW X3 (2018-2024), known as the G01, is a compact premium SUV that blends impressive handling with stout performance, practicality and modern technology. This generation was launched in 2017 with a tweaked wheelbase making it slightly longer and more spacious than its predecessor. A range of versions are offered, including petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid models, with a high-performance BMW X3 M Competition derivative available. The spacious, comfortable and well-designed cabin features excellent build quality, an easy-to-understand infotainment system and a large 550-litre boot to accommodate most luggage requirements with ease.

Where the BMW sets itself apart from rivals such as the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Discovery Sport is on the road. Even the entry-level engines are flexible and powerful, and the X3's handling is far more sporting and engaging. It's refined and rides well, though sportier models can be less relaxing on broken surfaces. Running costs vary significantly depending on the model; the base xDrive20i and xDrive20d are capable of averaging up to 36.7mpg and 47.9mpg respectively, whilst the plug-in hybrid xDrive30e offers up to 148.7mpg and emissions as low as 44g/km of CO2. The X3 M Competition, however, achieves a best of 24.8mpg. BMW offers fixed-price servicing plans to help spread costs, with plans available from £25 per month.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium SUV with engaging handling, those wanting a choice of efficient engines, and drivers prioritising a spacious, comfortable cabin with modern technology.

Not ideal for: Those requiring off-road capability, buyers needing a seven-seat option, or those seeking the most comfortable ride in sportier trim levels.

The Verdict

You should buy the X3 if: You're seeking a premium SUV with engaging handling, want a choice of efficient engines, or prioritise a spacious, comfortable cabin with modern technology.

Consider alternatives if: You require off-road capability, need a seven-seat option, or prefer maximum comfort in sportier trim levels.

Competitive Position: The BMW X3 (2018-2024) is a standout contender in the premium compact SUV market, offering superior driving dynamics and an impressive overall package. Whilst the Volvo XC60 can be more comfortable and the Porsche Macan offers thrilling performance, the X3 excels in balancing engaging handling with practicality and modern equipment. The Audi Q5 is a capable alternative, but the BMW's sporting character and engine choice give it a clear edge. For buyers prioritising an engaging drive without compromising on comfort and technology, the X3 easily justifies its place on your shopping list.

Customers say

The BMW X3 has garnered positive feedback from owners across model years, who appreciate its comfort, reliability, and impressive performance. Many drivers highlighted the spacious interior and significant cargo space as key advantages, along with a smooth power delivery from the engine. However, some noted that the ride's firmness might not appeal to everyone, and a few mentioned concerns about high insurance costs.

Bonnet and front bumper is covered in significant stone chips that they have tried to paint over using a slightly different colour and damage to the interior door trim - over £1,000 to repair with BMW

It is a good looking car but the insurance bracket is too high.
