BMW X3 (2025-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy cabin and a big boot	Unsure how it behaves on standard suspension setups
Good choice of powertrains	Some surprisingly iffy interior materials
Great to drive	Some key equipment items cost extra

Quick Summary

The BMW X3 (2025-present) is the fourth-generation iteration of BMW's mid-size family SUV, representing a logical evolution of its predecessor. Built on a heavily revised version of the previous platform, it combines dynamic driving characteristics with practical interior space. The cabin offers impressive legroom and headroom for rear passengers, whilst the 570-litre boot (460 litres in the 30e plug-in hybrid) provides generous load space with a low loading lip. The rear seats fold in a versatile 40/20/40 configuration, and there's abundant storage throughout, including a large cubby with wireless phone charging.

Four powertrain options are available: the 20 petrol (205bhp), the 30e plug-in hybrid (295bhp with up to 56 miles electric range), the 20d diesel (194bhp), and the sporty M50 (393bhp). The entry-level 20 petrol delivers adequate performance with reasonable fuel economy of up to 40.9mpg, whilst the M50 offers thrilling acceleration but thirstier consumption. Adaptive suspension is available as an option, transforming the driving experience from firm and sporty to comfortable and forgiving. The infotainment system features dual high-definition screens, the familiar iDrive rotary controller, and comprehensive connectivity including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium mid-size family SUV with excellent practicality, dynamic driving characteristics, and multiple powertrain choices, including an efficient plug-in hybrid option.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising budget-friendly motoring, as the X3 commands premium pricing, and buyers wanting key equipment as standard rather than optional extras.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X3 if: You're seeking a premium mid-size family SUV with excellent practicality, dynamic driving characteristics, and multiple powertrain options, including an efficient plug-in hybrid.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise budget-friendly motoring or prefer key equipment included as standard rather than as optional extras.

Competitive Position: The BMW X3 (2025-present) is a compelling choice in the premium mid-size SUV segment, matching rivals like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC for overall appeal. Its combination of roomy interior, versatile boot space, and engaging driving dynamics sets it apart. Whilst the Lexus NX offers better value for money, the X3 delivers superior driving engagement and a more comprehensive powertrain selection. The X3's main drawback is its reliance on optional extras for key features, and uncertainty about how standard suspension setups perform. Nevertheless, for buyers prioritising dynamic handling and premium quality, the X3 represents an excellent choice in its class.
