BMW X3 F25 (2011-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Agile and fun to drive	No petrol or hybrid versions
Sensible running costs for an SUV	Strictly a five-seater whereas some rivals seat seven
Well made and roomy interior	Beware of faulty timing chains

Quick Summary

The BMW X3 F25 (2011-2017) is a second-generation SUV that represents a significant improvement over its predecessor. Unveiled at the 2010 Paris motor show, it earned widespread praise for its performance, handling, and practicality. The F25 is equally at home in town, on B-roads, or motorways, offering agility and poise that beat most SUVs. With 550 litres of boot space expanding to 1,600 litres with rear seats lowered, it provides generous room for passengers and luggage, surpassing rivals like the Audi Q5.

Throughout its life, every F25 X3 was diesel powered, with engine options ranging from the entry-level sDrive 18d (141bhp) to the performance-focused 35d (309bhp). The most popular xDrive 20d offered a balanced blend of performance and economy. A 2014 mid-life update introduced TwinPower Turbo engines with improved efficiency and refinement. Running costs are reasonable for an SUV, with realistic fuel economy of 40-50mpg depending on the engine. The well-appointed interior uses quality materials, and the X3 offers prestige-badged appeal with genuine driving enjoyment.

Best for: Drivers seeking a prestige SUV with engaging handling, practical space, and sensible running costs; those prioritising driving dynamics and quality interior finish.

Not ideal for: Buyers requiring seven seats, preferring petrol or hybrid powertrains, or seeking maximum reliability (consider a Lexus NX instead).

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X3 if: You seek a prestige SUV with engaging handling, practical space, and sensible running costs, or prioritise driving dynamics and quality interior finish.

Consider alternatives if: You require seven seats, prefer petrol or hybrid powertrains, or seek maximum reliability (consider a Lexus NX instead).

Competitive Position: The BMW X3 F25 (2011-2017) stands out as the strongest contender in the premium compact SUV segment, offering superior driving dynamics and agility compared to rivals. Whilst the Land Rover Discovery Sport provides optional seven-seat practicality and the Mercedes-Benz GLC offers premium refinement, the X3 delivers the most engaging drive with well-made interiors and reasonable running costs for an SUV. The Audi Q3, though capable, lacks the X3's driving appeal. For buyers prioritising a prestige-badged SUV that's genuinely enjoyable to drive whilst remaining practical and affordable to run, the BMW X3 F25 is hard to beat.
