BMW X3 (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More fun to drive than most rivals | Sportier versions have a firm ride |
| A wide choice of efficient petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid engines | Not as able off road as a Land Rover |
| Spacious and comfortable cabin | No seven-seat option |
Quick Summary
The BMW X3 (2018-2024), known as the G01, is a compact premium SUV that blends impressive handling with stout performance, practicality and modern technology. This generation was launched in 2017 with a slightly longer wheelbase, offering increased spaciousness and fresh styling. Inside, you'll find a well-designed cabin with excellent build quality, easy-to-understand controls, and a spacious 550-litre boot. A range of versions are offered, including petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid models, ensuring there's something to suit most buyers.
The BMW sets itself apart from rivals such as the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Discovery Sport with its engaging and sporting handling, even with entry-level engines. The plug-in hybrid xDrive30e offers the lowest emissions and best economy figures at up to 148.7mpg, whilst the base xDrive20i and xDrive20d achieve up to 36.7mpg and 47.9mpg respectively. Running costs vary depending on the model chosen, with VED rates being a significant consideration for higher-priced variants. BMW offers fixed-price servicing plans to help manage maintenance costs, with options starting from £25 per month.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium SUV with engaging driving dynamics, those wanting a wide choice of efficient engines, and families requiring a spacious and comfortable interior.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising off-road capability, buyers needing a seven-seat option, or those seeking the most comfortable ride in sportier trim levels.

The Verdict
You should buy the X3 if: You're seeking a premium SUV with engaging driving dynamics, want a wide choice of efficient engines, or require a spacious and comfortable interior for family use.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise off-road capability, need a seven-seat option, or prefer maximum comfort over sporting handling in sportier trim levels.
Competitive Position: The BMW X3 (2018-2024) is a standout in the premium compact SUV segment, offering the most engaging driving experience amongst its rivals. Whilst the Volvo XC60 may offer greater comfort and the Land Rover Discovery Sport superior off-road credentials, the X3's overall package of handling, efficiency, spaciousness and modern equipment makes it an excellent choice for buyers prioritising driving enjoyment. The Porsche Macan delivers similar driving thrills but at a higher price point, whilst the Audi Q5 is a capable alternative, though less dynamic. For those seeking the best blend of performance, practicality and technology in a premium SUV, the X3 is a compelling proposition.
