BMW i4 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Rewarding and comfortable to drive	Not as well equipped as some rivals
High-quality interior	Rear-seat space could be better
M60 offers explosive performance	Expensive to buy

Quick Summary

The BMW i4 is a fully electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, designed for buyers who want an electric car that still looks and feels like a traditional BMW. The current line-up features three powertrain options: the entry-level eDrive35 with a 67.1kWh battery offering 299 miles of range, the mid-range eDrive40 with an 81.1kWh battery delivering 365 miles, and the high-performance M60 with dual motors, four-wheel drive, and a 0-62mph time of just 3.7 seconds. All models combine smart styling, interior quality, and sharp driving dynamics that make the i4 one of the best driver's cars in the executive electric class.

The i4 shares its body and platform with the 4 Series Gran Coupe, providing four doors and space for four adults, though rear passengers may find legroom and headroom somewhat constrained. The 470-litre boot features a large hatchback opening and 40:20:40 split rear seats, though it is fairly shallow. Running costs are competitive if you can charge at home on an off-peak tariff, bringing cost-per-mile into single figures. However, the i4 is more expensive than most alternatives, and whilst standard equipment has improved, you'll likely need to explore the options list. BMW backs the i4 with a three-year unlimited-mileage warranty and eight years/100,000 miles for the battery pack.

Best for: Drivers seeking a premium electric saloon with engaging handling, excellent comfort on long journeys, and strong residual values; those who can charge at home and want low running costs.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those needing maximum rear-seat space, or drivers who want comprehensive standard equipment without additional costs.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the i4 if: You want a premium electric saloon with engaging handling, excellent comfort on long journeys, and strong residual values, or you can charge at home and want low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, need maximum rear-seat space, or require comprehensive standard equipment without additional costs.

Competitive Position: The BMW i4 is the most complete and satisfying mid-size executive electric car available. It offers superior driving dynamics and a better driving position than the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2, with a more polished ride and handling. Whilst it commands a premium price and requires more option-box exploration than some rivals, the i4's high-quality interior, rewarding driving experience, and strong residual values justify the investment for discerning buyers. The explosive M60 variant also provides genuine performance thrills in the executive EV segment.
