BMW i4 (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rewarding and comfortable to drive | Not as well equipped as some rivals |
| Superbly made cabin | Cheaper EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 have more space in the back |
| The M50 is savagely fast | Expensive to buy |
Quick Summary
The BMW i4 (2021-present) is a pure electric variant of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, powered by an 80.7kWh battery delivering a range of 337 to 352 miles. It's available as a 335bhp eDrive40 (rear-wheel drive) or a 536bhp M50 (all-wheel drive), with the latter receiving treatment from BMW's M performance division. Blending sleek styling with the practicality of a four-door executive car, it offers a more conventional electric experience compared to the iX.
Driving dynamics are a key highlight, praised for precise steering, keen handling, and exceptional performance, especially the M50 which achieves 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds. The cabin is conventional but advanced, featuring BMW Operating System 8, a large touchscreen, and an intuitive rotary dial. While rear space is not as generous as some SUV rivals, its 470-litre hatchback boot is practical. Despite a premium purchase price, running costs are significantly lower than petrol equivalents.
Best for: Drivers seeking a rewarding and comfortable electric car, those who appreciate a superbly made cabin and exceptional driving dynamics, or buyers looking for a savagely fast EV (M50).
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum rear passenger space (e.g., larger SUV EVs), those on a strict budget due to its higher purchase price, or those expecting extensive standard equipment given its premium cost.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW i4 | 5/5 | 3.0/5 | 35.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Kia EV6 | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 27.5% | 4.5/5 |
| Polestar 2 | 4/5 | 0.0/5 | 32.5% | 3.9/5 |
| Tesla Model 3 | 5/5 | 4.2/5 | 35.5% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the i4 if: You're looking for an electric car that's truly great to drive, offering a blend of enthusiastic verve and confident comfort, with a superbly made cabin. It's ideal if you value superior ride and handling over rivals like the Tesla Model 3 or Polestar 2, and if you can justify the extra cost for a premium executive EV experience.
Consider alternatives if: You require more generous rear passenger space, need a vehicle that's better equipped as standard for its price point, or if budget is a primary concern. You might also consider alternatives if you heavily rely on Tesla's Supercharger network for long-distance travel.
Competitive Position: The BMW i4 stands out as a top-tier mid-sized executive EV, offering a compelling blend of thrilling performance, refined driving dynamics, and a high-quality interior. While it carries a premium price tag and may not match some rivals for standard equipment or rear space, its superior driving experience and build quality position it above many competitors, including the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2, for those who prioritise driving pleasure and brand prestige. The lower running costs of an EV further enhance its appeal despite the initial investment.

3 Overall rating
(1 reviews)Very high price compared to its petrol version with same exterior design why would we should pay 20k extra for electric vehicles while we wont be able to safe that much over the lifespan of car it self l, specially now when electricity prices are .35p per kilowatt with cap without cap it can be 70p so if we do maths here we are gonna end up spending more on charging than filing petrol and all that with 40% more expensive car and hassle of charge
