BYD Atto 3 (2025) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Comfortable and quiet to drive	Interior design will be divisive
Absolutely loaded with standard kit	Could be (a lot) cheaper
Roomy, high-quality interior	Some rivals are more fun to drive

Quick Summary

The BYD Atto 3 is a mid-sized, pure electric SUV that sits between the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 in terms of size. It features a 201bhp electric motor, a 60.5kWh usable battery with cobalt-free Blade lithium-iron phosphate technology, and an official WLTP range of 261 miles. Real-world driving range is estimated at 220–250 miles in summer and 160–190 miles in winter. Rapid charging from 10–80% takes approximately 35–40 minutes, whilst a 7kW home charger provides a full charge in under ten hours. The Atto 3 is exceptionally well-equipped as standard, with features including a panoramic sunroof, heated seats, 360-degree cameras, adaptive cruise control, and a massive 12.8-inch or 15.6-inch touchscreen depending on trim.

The BYD Atto 3 is a genuinely competent family car that impresses with its quality, spaciousness, and generous standard equipment. Rear legroom rivals the Skoda Enyaq iV, and the 440-litre boot accommodates larger items with ease. The driving experience is cushy and refined, with soft suspension that absorbs road imperfections whilst maintaining assured handling. However, the unconventional interior design—inspired by a gym with scalloped finishes and colourful plastics—may not appeal to all Western European tastes. At around £38,000, it's not cheap for a relatively new brand, and some rivals offer more engaging driving dynamics or lower pricing. Nevertheless, it represents solid value given the extensive standard specification and impressive technology.

Best for: Families seeking a comfortable, well-equipped electric SUV with impressive technology and spaciousness, and buyers prioritising practicality and quality over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Those seeking the sharpest handling or most engaging driving experience, buyers with limited budgets, or those who dislike unconventional interior design aesthetics.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Atto 3 if: You prioritise comfort, spaciousness, and comprehensive standard equipment, and seek a well-built electric family car with impressive technology and quality interior materials.

Consider alternatives if: You want the sharpest handling, the lowest price point, or prefer conventional interior design aesthetics that appeal to traditional Western European tastes.

Competitive Position: The BYD Atto 3 is a genuinely competent mid-sized electric SUV that competes well against established rivals like the Kia Niro EV, Volkswagen ID.4, and MG4. Whilst it doesn't match the Kia's five-star expert rating or the Volkswagen's superior value proposition, the Atto 3 distinguishes itself through exceptional standard equipment, impressive interior quality, and a refined, comfortable driving experience. However, at around £38,000, it sits at the premium end of the segment, and some rivals offer more engaging dynamics or better value. For buyers prioritising comfort, technology, and practicality over driving excitement or budget constraints, the Atto 3 remains a strong choice, though the unconventional interior design may prove divisive.
