Exactly what I wanted for a very good price. I had considered the prestige model but in the end decided I wouldn’t use the additional features which had also had mixed reviews.

Great value for money. The Prestige is well packaged, comfortable, great acceleration and looks fab.

Seems good value with a lot of extras worth paying extra for Duster Extreme. 1.3 litre engine much quieter than the Journey 1 litre model I test-drived. Have owned Dacia Logan for 10 years from new with very few problems. Can't fault Dacia value for money.

Dacia Duster (2012-2018) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely cheap to buy and run | Rough and ready finish |
| The cabin is practical | The cheapest models are short of equipment |
| Choice of 2WD and 4WD | Not great to drive |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Duster (2012-2018) is a rugged, utilitarian small SUV that prioritises affordability and practicality over style and refinement. Launched at just £8,995, it massively undercuts rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, offering genuine value for money. Available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive forms, it provides decent room for five adults and a generous boot of 475 litres (rising to 1,636 litres with rear seats folded). The choice of 104bhp 1.6-litre petrol or 109bhp 1.5-litre diesel engines keeps running costs low, with diesel versions achieving around 50mpg in real-world driving.
Whilst the Duster's plain cabin and bare-bones equipment levels may feel cheap, its uncomplicated mechanicals make servicing inexpensive and straightforward. The driving experience is functional rather than engaging, with light steering and a high driving position offering good visibility, though vague steering and body roll are notable drawbacks. A 2014 facelift and 2018 updates improved equipment levels, with later models gaining air conditioning and sat-nav options. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a simple, practical small SUV without concern for on-road performance, the Duster represents excellent value, particularly in all-wheel-drive form for countryside use.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, those needing a practical small SUV, drivers in rural areas requiring all-wheel-drive capability, and those prioritising low running costs over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium cabin quality, refined driving experience, advanced technology, or those who value on-road performance and handling.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Duster | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 40.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Fiat Panda | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 38.7% | 4.1/5 |
| Nissan Qashqai | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 39.2% | 4.5/5 |
| Suzuki Vitara | 4/5 | N/A | 22.4% | 3.8/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Duster if: You're on a tight budget, seeking a practical small SUV, need all-wheel-drive capability for rural driving, or prioritise low running costs over driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You value premium cabin quality, refined driving experience, advanced technology, or prioritise on-road performance and handling.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Duster (2012-2018) stands out as the most affordable option in the small SUV segment, offering exceptional value and the highest percentage of good/great deals amongst its rivals. Whilst it trails the Nissan Qashqai in expert rating and overall CarGurus score, it matches the Fiat Panda on expert rating and surpasses both in user satisfaction and deal availability. The Duster's unique selling point is its combination of affordability, practicality, and all-wheel-drive availability at a budget price point. However, buyers seeking superior driving dynamics, cabin quality, or technology should consider the higher-rated Nissan Qashqai, whilst those wanting a smaller, more nimble vehicle might prefer the Fiat Panda.
