Dacia Duster (2012-2018) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely cheap to buy and run | Rough and ready finish |
| The cabin is practical | The cheapest models are short of equipment |
| Choice of 2WD and 4WD | Not great to drive |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Duster (2012-2018) is a rugged, utilitarian small SUV that prioritises affordability and practicality above all else. Launched at just £8,995, it massively undercuts rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, offering genuine value for money. Available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive forms, it provides decent room for five adults and a generous boot of 475 litres (rising to 1,636 litres with seats folded). Engine options include a 104bhp 1.6-litre petrol or a 109bhp 1.5-litre diesel, with the latter achieving around 50mpg in real-world driving.
The Duster's no-nonsense approach extends to its equipment levels, with basic Access trim offering minimal creature comforts. However, a 2014 facelift and 2018 updates improved specification, introducing features like air conditioning and sat-nav on higher trims. Whilst the driving experience is uninspiring—with vague steering, body roll, and a wallowing suspension—the uncomplicated mechanics mean servicing is straightforward and inexpensive. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, unpretentious small SUV without concern for on-road performance, the Duster represents excellent value.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, those needing a practical small SUV, drivers in rural areas requiring light off-road capability, and those prioritising low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium cabin quality, refined driving dynamics, or comprehensive equipment as standard on all trims.

The Verdict
You should buy the Duster if: You're on a tight budget, seeking a practical small SUV, need light off-road capability, or prioritise low running costs over driving refinement.
Consider alternatives if: You value premium cabin quality, refined driving dynamics, or comprehensive equipment as standard on all trims.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Duster (2012-2018) is the most affordable option in the small SUV segment, offering exceptional value for money. Whilst it trails rivals like the Nissan Qashqai and Suzuki Vitara in expert ratings and driving dynamics, its unbeatable price point and practical design make it ideal for budget-conscious buyers. The choice of 4WD at such a low cost is particularly appealing for rural drivers. However, those willing to spend more will find superior cabin quality, refinement, and on-road performance in competitors, particularly the Qashqai and Vitara.

What people say
The Duster was good value for money, just what I was looking for a small 4x4 .
Nice looking and very economical but interior is very basic
After reading positive reviews about the Duster I decided to go and try one out, Surprisingly comfy and quite perky for a diesel and a great plus is the economy is superb and low road tax band make the car a bargain, very roomy with a nice high seating position. Recommended
I like the ability - as anolder person to truly sit up and see out of the car with ease. Controls are fine for modern needs and I am sure it will hold its price better than other cars.
Shame it doesn’t have parking sensors that would of been perfect
