Ford EcoSport (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheap to run and affordable to buy | Doesn't deliver the sharp drive you'd expect of a Ford |
| Good choice of petrol and diesel engines | Irritating side-opening tailgate |
| Improved interior after 2018 facelift | Early cars weren't well equipped |
Quick Summary
The Ford EcoSport, launched in 2014, was initially a distinctly half-hearted effort, designed for its South American division. It lacked the driving verve expected of a Ford, featuring a dated interior, awkward styling, and less than solid build quality, causing it to trail European rivals. However, Ford quickly responded with a series of significant updates, most notably a major facelift in 2018 that introduced a far more modern interior and improved competitiveness.
While its side-opening tailgate can be inconvenient, the EcoSport offers adequate interior space with a 356-litre boot (expanding to 1,238 litres with seats down). Running costs are a saving grace, with frugal engines (EcoBoost petrols often achieving around 40mpg, diesels closer to 50mpg real-world) and cheap servicing. While later models are improved, it struggles to compete with smarter rivals like the Ford Puma, making a used, post-facelift model the most sensible option.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a compact SUV with good equipment levels (especially post-2018 facelift) and low running costs, or those looking for an affordable used car where depreciation has already taken its toll.
Not ideal for: Buyers expecting class-leading driving dynamics or a premium feel, those who find the side-opening tailgate inconvenient, or those considering earlier, pre-facelift models.

| Ford EcoSport | 2/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.6% | 4.0/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the EcoSport if: You're on a budget, seeking a compact SUV with good equipment levels (post-2018 facelift) and low running costs, or looking for an affordable used car where depreciation has already taken its toll.
Consider alternatives if: You expect class-leading driving dynamics or a premium feel, find the side-opening tailgate inconvenient, or are considering earlier, pre-facelift models.
Competitive Position: The Ford EcoSport (2014-present) initially missed the mark but significantly improved with its 2018 facelift, offering better interiors and equipment. While not matching rivals like the Ford Puma for driving dynamics or overall refinement, its low running costs, decent practicality, and affordability as a used car make it a reasonable option for budget-conscious buyers, particularly post-facelift examples.

4.5 Overall rating
(27 reviews)An excellent choice for the older driver. Easy access no unnecessary stooping or bending. Easy loading of luggage etc. controls nicely laid out and not overly complex or confusing.
Nice car, not keen on the way the tail gate opens, however worth the money.
I would highly recommend this model to anyone looking for an all round car / suv. Specification are high, comfort is second to none & value for money.Sent Easy to get used to, just take time to get used to the on-board computer & if connecting another device ie:phone make sure your Android is linked correctly. All being said a must have vehicle.
A great car so much better than the fiesta it’s based on
My wife has always liked the fiestas she has owned and this car is wholly based on the same model but taller enabling getting in and out easier and the all round vision is much improved. (The trade call it a fiesta on steroids). As with all cars you can always find one or two issues you might have liked better but I myself found it a nice drive ,comfortable and responsive. I would have liked powerfold mirrors (available on top of the range models) and and an uplifting boot door instead of side hinged, however first impressions are very good.
