Ford EcoSport (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheap to run and affordable to buy | Doesn't deliver the sharp drive you'd expect of a Ford |
| Good choice of petrol and diesel engines | Irritating side-opening tailgate |
| Improved interior after 2018 facelift | Early cars weren't well equipped |
Quick Summary
The Ford EcoSport (2014-present) is a compact SUV that initially disappointed when launched, as Ford adapted a South American model for European markets. Early versions suffered from dated styling, an uninspiring interior, and driving dynamics that lacked the verve expected of a Ford. However, the company responded positively, and the 2018 facelift significantly improved the car with a modern interior, refreshed exterior, and enhanced driving characteristics. The EcoSport offers adequate interior space with 356 litres of boot capacity, expandable to 1,238 litres with rear seats folded, though the side-opening tailgate is an annoying quirk requiring space behind the vehicle for access.
Running costs are a genuine strength, with frugal engines delivering real-world fuel economy around 40-50mpg depending on specification. Servicing is affordable, and tax costs are reasonable. The EcoBoost petrol engines are smooth and eager, whilst diesel options provide excellent efficiency. Post-2018 models feel considerably more refined and modern, though the EcoSport still trails sharper rivals like the Ford Puma and SEAT Arona for driving dynamics. As a used purchase, particularly a post-facelift example, the EcoSport represents reasonable value, though depreciation can be a factor given its modest popularity.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable compact SUV with low running costs, those prioritising practicality and engine choice, and drivers comfortable with modest driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Those expecting Ford's renowned driving dynamics, buyers needing a conventional upward-opening tailgate, or those seeking a premium interior feel and cutting-edge technology.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford EcoSport | 2/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.1% | 4.0/5 |
| SEAT Arona | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 34.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Peugeot 2008 | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 33.6% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the EcoSport if: You're budget-conscious, seeking an affordable compact SUV with low running costs, prioritising practicality and engine choice, or comfortable with modest driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You expect Ford's renowned driving dynamics, need a conventional upward-opening tailgate, or seek a premium interior and cutting-edge technology.
Competitive Position: The Ford EcoSport (2014-present) occupies a challenging position in the compact SUV market. Whilst it offers genuine strengths in affordability, running costs, and engine variety, it falls short of rivals like the SEAT Arona for refinement and driving dynamics. The 2018 facelift significantly improved the car, making post-facelift models considerably more competitive. However, the EcoSport remains best suited to budget-conscious buyers willing to compromise on driving engagement. For those seeking a more modern, sharper, and better-equipped compact SUV, the SEAT Arona represents a superior choice, though the Nissan Juke offers strong user satisfaction and the Peugeot 2008 provides an alternative option at similar price points.

Overall, drivers of the Ford EcoSport appreciate its comfortable ride, spaciousness, and economical value. Many favor its ease of access and a nice set of features, though there are critiques regarding the performance of the engine, particularly noting that some find it a bit sluggish. The unique boot door design is a point of contention as some find it inconvenient. Despite these concerns, most owners find the EcoSport to be a good choice for city driving and casual outings.

What people say
An excellent choice for the older driver. Easy access no unnecessary stooping or bending. Easy loading of luggage etc. controls nicely laid out and not overly complex or confusing.
Nice car, not keen on the way the tail gate opens, however worth the money.
I would highly recommend this model to anyone looking for an all round car / suv. Specification are high, comfort is second to none & value for money.Sent Easy to get used to, just take time to get used to the on-board computer & if connecting another device ie:phone make sure your Android is linked correctly. All being said a must have vehicle.
A great car so much better than the fiesta it’s based on
My wife has always liked the fiestas she has owned and this car is wholly based on the same model but taller enabling getting in and out easier and the all round vision is much improved. (The trade call it a fiesta on steroids). As with all cars you can always find one or two issues you might have liked better but I myself found it a nice drive ,comfortable and responsive. I would have liked powerfold mirrors (available on top of the range models) and and an uplifting boot door instead of side hinged, however first impressions are very good.
