Honda CR-V (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Efficient hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains	Rivals are cheaper to buy
Very roomy interior	Hybrid is noisy when accelerating hard
Big and practical boot	Infotainment now lags behind best in class

Quick Summary

The Honda CR-V (2026) is a premium Japanese family SUV that continues the model's reputation for practicality and dependability. This sixth-generation CR-V is longer, wider, and more spacious than its predecessor, with a commanding driving position and exceptional interior room. Available exclusively as hybrid (e:HEV) or plug-in hybrid (e:PHEV) models, it combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with electric motors for smooth, efficient power delivery. The plug-in hybrid offers up to 50 miles of electric-only range, whilst the standard hybrid achieves 42.2mpg on mixed driving. Both variants feature a substantial boot of 579–617 litres, expandable to over 1,600 litres with rear seats folded, and rear seats that slide fore and aft by up to 19cm for flexible space management.

The CR-V comes well-equipped across all trims, with the entry-level Elegance featuring heated leather seats, panoramic sunroof, and dual-zone climate control as standard. The driving experience prioritises comfort over sportiness, with soft suspension and a smooth hybrid system that operates quietly at lower speeds. Whilst the plug-in hybrid's extra weight can compromise ride quality on undulating roads, the standard hybrid maintains excellent composure. Running costs are competitive for the class, particularly for the e:PHEV with its low 18g/km CO2 emissions and significant BIK tax advantages for company car drivers. However, the CR-V's premium pricing sits above rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage, and it lacks the seven-seat option available in competitors like the Skoda Kodiaq.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical, and dependable SUV with advanced hybrid technology; company car drivers (especially the e:PHEV); and buyers prioritising comfort and equipment over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those wanting seven seats, drivers prioritising sporty handling, or those seeking the latest infotainment technology.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the CR-V if: You're seeking a spacious, practical, and dependable family SUV with advanced hybrid technology, or a company car driver looking for low emissions and tax advantages.

Consider alternatives if: You need seven seats, prioritise budget over equipment, want the latest infotainment, or prefer sporty handling characteristics.

Competitive Position: The Honda CR-V (2026) is a solid contender in the premium family SUV segment, offering exceptional practicality, efficiency, and standard equipment. Whilst it commands a higher price than rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage, the CR-V justifies this with its spacious interior, advanced hybrid powertrains, and comprehensive specification. The plug-in hybrid variant is particularly compelling for company car drivers and urban commuters. However, it falls short of true premium rivals like the BMW X3 in terms of driving dynamics and prestige, and lacks the seven-seat flexibility of the Skoda Kodiaq. For families prioritising comfort, space, and technology over sportiness or badge appeal, the CR-V remains an excellent choice.
