Quick Summary
The Honda CR-V is one of the most recognisable nameplates in the SUV market, and this sixth-generation model is longer, wider, and more spacious than its predecessor. Available exclusively as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, the CR-V combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with two electric motors for smooth, efficient power delivery. The plug-in hybrid offers up to 50 miles of electric-only range, whilst the standard hybrid delivers a respectable 42.2mpg. Both models feature a commanding driving position, excellent rear legroom, and a generous boot capacity of up to 1,710 litres with the rear seats folded flat.
The CR-V prioritises comfort and practicality over driving excitement, with soft suspension that soaks up road imperfections effectively. All models come well-equipped as standard, including heated leather seats, panoramic sunroof, and dual-zone climate control. Whilst Honda's pricing is higher than some rivals, the CR-V's blend of efficiency, space, and technology makes it an easy family SUV to live with. The plug-in hybrid is particularly appealing for company car drivers, with CO2 emissions of just 18g/km, whilst the standard hybrid suits mixed driving patterns well.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical, and efficient SUV; company car drivers (plug-in hybrid); those prioritising comfort and technology over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers; drivers wanting a sportier driving experience; those requiring seven seats or the lowest running costs on motorways.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda CR-V | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 30.4% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X3 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Skoda Kodiaq | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Toyota RAV4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the CR-V if: You're seeking a spacious, practical, and efficient family SUV; you're a company car driver (plug-in hybrid); or you prioritise comfort and technology over driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, want a sportier driving experience, require seven seats, or need the lowest running costs on motorways.
Competitive Position: The Honda CR-V is a solid family SUV that combines efficiency, space, and technology in a well-rounded package. Whilst it doesn't quite match premium rivals like the BMW X3 for badge appeal, it offers comparable practicality and comes well-equipped as standard. The Skoda Kodiaq offers better value and seven-seat flexibility, whilst the Toyota RAV4 provides similar efficiency. However, the CR-V's hybrid powertrains, generous interior space, and comprehensive equipment list make it an easy choice for families prioritising comfort and practicality over cost or driving excitement.
