Honda HR-V (2021-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Clever Magic Seats in the rear	Small boot by class standards
Lots of standard equipment	Hybrid powertrain feels unresponsive
Low running costs	Cramped rear headroom

Quick Summary

The Honda HR-V (2021-2024) is a sensible small hybrid SUV that combines comfort, quality, and generous standard equipment. Its standout feature is the clever Magic Seats in the rear, which fold and flip ingeniously to maximise cargo space and versatility. The self-charging hybrid powertrain delivers an official fuel economy of 52.3mpg, with low running costs and modest tax incentives. Even the entry-level Elegance trim includes climate control, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and smartphone integration.

However, the HR-V has notable limitations. The hybrid powertrain feels unresponsive, with 129bhp taking 10.6 seconds to reach 62mph, and the engine becomes noisy when pushed. Rear headroom is cramped for taller passengers, and the 319-litre boot is small for the class. Whilst the suspension is well-tuned and the cabin feels solidly built, some interior plastics lack the quality expected at this price point. Overall, it's a decent car worthy of consideration, though better all-rounders exist in the small SUV market.

Best for: Buyers prioritising comfort, equipment, and clever practicality features, those seeking low running costs, and families who value the innovative Magic Seats.

Not ideal for: Those needing strong performance, maximum boot space, or tall rear passengers requiring generous headroom.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the HR-V if: You prioritise comfort, equipment, and clever practicality features, seek low running costs, or value the innovative Magic Seats for versatile cargo handling.

Consider alternatives if: You need strong performance, maximum boot space, or require generous rear headroom for taller passengers.

Competitive Position: The Honda HR-V is a well-equipped and comfortable small SUV that excels in standard equipment and running costs. Whilst it trails the Toyota C-HR and Volkswagen T-Roc in expert ratings, it matches or exceeds them in user satisfaction and deal availability. The HR-V's unique Magic Seats and comprehensive standard kit make it compelling for practical buyers, though its unresponsive hybrid powertrain and limited boot space mean it's not the best all-rounder in the class. For those prioritising comfort and equipment over performance, it remains a sensible choice.
