Hyundai Bayon (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Striking and unusual design	Uninspired interior design
Spacious and comfortable cabin	Lacks the sliding rear seats fitted to many rivals
Long warranty	Not as well equipped as the Hyundai Kona

Quick Summary

The Hyundai Bayon (2021-present) is a compact SUV that stands out from the crowd with its radical styling, featuring a distinctive snub nose, angular side profile, and boomerang-style rear lights. Based on the Hyundai i20 hatchback, it shares the same dashboard, which is clearly laid out and easy to use, though built from cheap-feeling plastics. The interior is roomy with plenty of headroom and legroom, though boot space is modest and rear seats don't slide like some rivals. Available with two 1.0-litre turbo T-GDi petrol engines (99bhp or 118bhp) paired with manual or automatic gearboxes, the Bayon delivers surprising driving engagement with responsive steering, good grip, and agile handling without sacrificing comfort.

Running costs are reasonable, with real-world fuel economy of 45-50mpg and a timing chain rather than a belt, reducing long-term maintenance costs. Hyundai's competitive servicing costs and aggressive menu pricing scheme keep ownership affordable. The Bayon comes in three trims: SE Connect, Premium, and Ultimate, each well-equipped for its class. Whilst its rivals may be smarter and more upmarket, the Bayon offers a well-rounded package combining striking design, practicality, comfort, and engaging driving dynamics at competitive pricing, backed by Hyundai's long warranty and excellent reliability reputation.

Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive compact SUV with striking design, spacious interior, and engaging driving dynamics at competitive prices, plus those valuing Hyundai's warranty and reliability.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium interior quality, maximum versatility with sliding rear seats, or the highest levels of equipment compared to the Hyundai Kona.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Bayon if: You're seeking a distinctive compact SUV with striking design, spacious interior, and engaging driving dynamics at competitive prices, or value Hyundai's warranty and reliability reputation.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, maximum versatility with sliding rear seats, or the highest levels of equipment compared to the Hyundai Kona.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai Bayon (2021-present) is a strong contender in the compact SUV market, offering exceptional value and a well-rounded package. Whilst the Volkswagen T-Cross and Renault Captur score higher with expert reviewers and offer smarter, more upmarket interiors, the Bayon matches them on value and outperforms them with user satisfaction. Its striking design, spacious cabin, engaging driving dynamics, and Hyundai's competitive pricing and long warranty make it a compelling choice for buyers seeking something different. The Nissan Juke Mk2 offers similar expert ratings but the Bayon provides better overall value and a more comfortable, practical proposition.
