Hyundai Tucson (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of standard kit	Not all that fun to drive
Five-year warranty	Unsettled ride on big 19-inch wheels
Choice of hybrid powertrains	Plug-in hybrid range not a match for best in class

Quick Summary

The Hyundai Tucson (2021-present) is a midsize family SUV that has evolved from a budget offering into an aspirational vehicle capable of competing with premium brands. The current generation, which received a facelift in mid-2024, features distinctive styling with segmented front lights, Coke-bottle curves, and a striking interior with twin silver trim lines. Post-facelift models boast a curved infotainment setup with two 12.3-inch screens, making it one of the best systems on the market. With 620-litres of boot space (non-hybrid), generous legroom, and headroom for all passengers, the Tucson offers excellent practicality for families.

The Tucson is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine available in multiple configurations: a non-hybrid manual, mild-hybrid automatics (158bhp post-facelift), a self-charging hybrid (212bhp post-facelift), and a plug-in hybrid (284bhp post-facelift). Whilst not particularly engaging to drive, the Tucson is an easygoing companion with smooth, quiet performance and impressive efficiency. The self-charging hybrid achieves over 50mpg, whilst the plug-in hybrid offers around 40 miles of electric-only range. Running costs are reasonable with annual servicing intervals every 10,000 miles, and the five-year warranty provides excellent peace of mind.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, well-equipped SUV with modern technology, buyers wanting hybrid options for better efficiency, and those prioritising comfort and standard kit over driving engagement.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging, fun-to-drive SUV, those sensitive to ride quality on larger wheels, or buyers needing class-leading plug-in hybrid range.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Tucson if: You're seeking a practical, well-equipped family SUV with modern technology, want hybrid options for better efficiency, and prioritise comfort and standard kit over driving engagement.

Consider alternatives if: You desire an engaging, fun-to-drive SUV, are sensitive to ride quality on larger wheels, or need class-leading plug-in hybrid range.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai Tucson (2021-present) is a strong contender in the midsize family SUV market, offering excellent value and a comprehensive range of standard equipment. Whilst the Volkswagen Tiguan and Kia Sportage score slightly higher with expert reviewers, the Tucson matches them on overall CarGurus rating and user satisfaction. Its distinctive styling, impressive interior technology (particularly post-facelift), and choice of hybrid powertrains make it a compelling proposition. The Tucson's five-year warranty and generous boot space further strengthen its appeal, though buyers seeking engaging handling or class-leading plug-in hybrid range may prefer alternatives.
