Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of standard equipment | Not as fun to drive as a Skoda Yeti |
| Affordable to buy | Gruff diesel engines |
| Excellent safety by the standards of the time | Unsettled ride |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) was a breakout car for Hyundai, demonstrating that the Korean manufacturer could build desirable vehicles with eye-catching design and high quality that challenged mainstream brands. This compact SUV offered a practical alternative to traditional family hatchbacks, with a spacious 591-litre boot expanding to 1,436 litres with rear seats folded. The cabin featured metallic accents and modern styling, though materials lacked the soft-touch qualities of some rivals. With a high-set driving position, excellent visibility, and comprehensive standard equipment across trim levels, the ix35 proved both comfortable and well-equipped for families.
The ix35's on-road manners showed Hyundai's engineering progress, with accurate steering and confidence-inspiring handling, though the firm ride could be unsettled on smaller wheels. Engine choices were limited: the 1.6-litre petrol felt strained, whilst the 2.0-litre offered little improvement. The diesel options—particularly the 1.7-litre CRDi with generous mid-range torque—were the pick of the bunch, delivering around 40mpg in real-world driving. A 2013 facelift brought a restructured model line-up and improved infotainment. As a used buy, the ix35 remains a savvy choice for those seeking a distinctive, practical, and hassle-free family SUV at an affordable price.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped family SUV with excellent safety credentials and low purchase costs.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling dynamics or refined engine performance, or those sensitive to diesel engine noise.

The Verdict
You should buy the ix35 if: You're seeking an affordable, practical, and well-equipped family SUV with excellent safety credentials and low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling dynamics, refined engine performance, or a smoother ride quality.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) is a solid contender in the compact SUV market, offering excellent value and comprehensive standard equipment. Whilst it cannot match the Skoda Yeti for driving dynamics or the Nissan Qashqai for overall refinement, its affordability, practicality, and robust build quality make it an intelligent choice for budget-conscious families. The ix35 represents a significant step forward for Hyundai, proving the brand could deliver desirable, well-built vehicles that compete on more than just price alone.
