Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of standard equipment | Not as fun to drive as a Skoda Yeti |
| Affordable to buy | Gruff diesel engines |
| Excellent safety by the standards of the time | Unsettled ride |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) is a practical and well-equipped family SUV that marked a significant step forward for Hyundai's reputation. Arriving in 2010 as a replacement for the Tucson, it challenged established rivals like the Nissan Qashqai and Ford Kuga with attractive styling, a spacious 591-litre boot (expanding to 1,436 litres with rear seats folded), and generous standard equipment across both Style and Premium trim levels. The cabin feels modern and upmarket, with metallic accents and blue-backlit dials, though materials lack some soft-touch qualities found in competitors. A 2013 facelift brought a restructured model line-up and improved infotainment.
The ix35 offers confident on-road manners with accurate steering and assured handling, though the trade-off is a firm ride, particularly on optional 18-inch wheels. Engine choices are limited: the 1.6-litre petrol feels strained, whilst the 2.0-litre petrol offers little improvement. The real stars are the diesel units—the 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre CRDi engines deliver genuine mid-range torque and better real-world performance, achieving around 40mpg in everyday driving. As a used buy, the ix35 represents excellent value, offering practicality, comfort, and distinctive styling without the premium badge price tag.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, comfortable family SUV with generous standard equipment and low running costs, particularly those preferring diesel engines.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling dynamics (like a Skoda Yeti) or refined petrol engines, or those sensitive to firm suspension on poor road surfaces.

The Verdict
You should buy the ix35 if: You're seeking a practical, comfortable family SUV with generous standard equipment and low running costs, particularly if you prefer diesel engines and value affordability.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling dynamics, refined petrol engines, or a smoother ride quality on poor road surfaces.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) is a strong contender in the used compact SUV market, offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst it may not match the Skoda Yeti for driving enjoyment or the Nissan Qashqai for overall refinement, its affordability, generous standard equipment, and robust diesel engines make it a sensible choice for budget-conscious families. The ix35 proved Hyundai could build desirable, quality cars that consumers wanted for reasons beyond price, and as a used purchase, it remains a distinctive and hassle-free option in a competitive segment.

4.4 Overall rating
(12 reviews)Excellent value for money, lots of features and great performance
I have taken one of these for a test drive and as far Im concerned it ticks all the boxes that I require,Ive decided to wait until later on in the year to purchase one
The car has dents all over and fog lights gone, the car floor on the driver side is all gone, anly holes, very disappointing after dropping everything to go see the car with intention to buy. Very sad
Great looking car, The Hyundai in general is a great all rounder,i.e. a family car, a work horse and a luxury cruising car likened to the Vauxhall Moka which is a great comparison to the Hyundai
Gearbox made from chocolate other than that looks nice in the eye
