Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |

| Plenty of creature comforts for lifestyle customers | Expect high fuel bills compared with an SUV's |
| Excellent safety rating | Expensive to insure |
Quick Summary
The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a third-generation pickup truck that bridges the gap between utilitarian workhorse and lifestyle vehicle. Launched when key competitors like the Volkswagen Amarok and Mercedes-Benz X-Class exited the UK market, the D-Max offers three body styles: single cab with the largest load bed, extended cab with jump seats, and double cab with full rear seating. The cabin is notably more car-like than previous generations, featuring soft-touch plastics, snug side bolsters, and optional touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on higher-spec models.
Powered by a 1.9-litre diesel engine with 162bhp, the D-Max delivers impressive capability with four-wheel drive, low-range gearing, and hill descent control on most models. It handles well for a truck, offering agile cornering and confident steering, with a 3.5-tonne towing capacity on most variants. Running costs include fixed VED at £265 annually, attractive company car tax rates, and real-world fuel economy in the high 20s mpg. A wide range of trim levels—from utilitarian Utility models to the lifestyle-focused V-Cross—ensures there's a D-Max for most needs, though insurance sits in the maximum group 50D.
Best for: Buyers seeking a capable workhorse with lifestyle appeal, those wanting a practical alternative to SUVs with genuine off-road ability, and company car users benefiting from favourable tax rates.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising fuel economy over capability, those sensitive to diesel engine noise, or buyers seeking lower insurance premiums.

The Verdict
You should buy the D-Max if: You need a capable workhorse with lifestyle appeal, want a practical alternative to SUVs with genuine off-road ability, or are a company car user benefiting from favourable tax rates.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise fuel economy over capability, are sensitive to diesel engine noise, or seek lower insurance premiums.
Competitive Position: The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a strong contender in the pickup market, offering excellent capability, improved comfort, and competitive pricing. Whilst the Ford Ranger offers better value deals and the Toyota Hilux commands stronger residual values, the D-Max provides a compelling balance of practicality, creature comforts, and affordability. Its recent launch, combined with reduced competition from withdrawn rivals, positions it as a highly sensible choice for buyers seeking a versatile vehicle that works equally well as a workhorse or lifestyle truck.

4.9 Overall rating
(6 reviews)The Isuzu is very reliable but it tends to have steering and suspension problems with age. Comparable pickups are the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
It’s the ideal compromise for me between farming and construction delivering comfort and power for towing. The only thing I don’t like is the fact I have to disable the lane support every time I start.
Its reliable and sturdy and has good resale value.
Base model but does what it Says on the tin, real work horse with few frills. Great towing ability.
Fantastic car go anywhere reliability and comfort guaranteed
