| Excellent safety rating | Expensive to insure |
Quick Summary
The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) marks a significant evolution in the pickup truck market, moving beyond a purely utilitarian role to become a genuine alternative to traditional cars. Launched in 2021, this third-generation model benefits from a shrinking competitive landscape and boasts aggressive styling with a surprisingly comfortable and refined cabin, featuring more soft-touch plastics and improved driver ergonomics than its predecessors. Available in Single, Extended, and Double Cab configurations, it offers versatile load bed options and practical interior storage, including flip-up rear seats and under-seat compartments in double cab models.
Powered by a 1.9-litre diesel engine delivering 162bhp, the D-Max provides ample low-down grunt, paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. While the engine can be gruff, its relatively low weight ensures impressive agility for a pickup, complemented by robust suspension for capable off-road performance with switchable 4x4 and a low-range setting. Higher trims like the DL40 and V-Cross enhance the experience with touchscreen infotainment, wireless smartphone connectivity, and advanced safety features, making it a well-equipped, safe, and capable choice for both demanding work and active lifestyle use.
Best for: Buyers seeking a highly capable and versatile pickup for both work and family use, those needing serious off-road ability and towing capacity, or looking for a well-equipped truck with modern creature comforts.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising car-like refinement and quietness, buyers on a tight budget for fuel and insurance, or those who need a fixed-price service package.

The Verdict
You should buy the D-Max if: You're seeking a highly capable and versatile pickup for both work and family use, needing serious off-road ability and towing capacity, or looking for a well-equipped truck with modern creature comforts.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise car-like refinement and quietness, are on a tight budget for fuel and insurance, or require a fixed-price service package.
Competitive Position: The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a strong contender in a consolidating pickup market, offering excellent capability, versatility, and an increasingly car-like experience. While it faces competition from established rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, its combination of robust utility, enhanced comfort, and modern tech features positions it as a very worthy choice for a wide range of buyers, from tradespeople to lifestyle users. Its competitive pricing, especially for higher specifications, makes it an attractive alternative in a segment where many competitors have exited.

4.9 Overall rating
(6 reviews)It’s the ideal compromise for me between farming and construction delivering comfort and power for towing. The only thing I don’t like is the fact I have to disable the lane support every time I start.
The Isuzu is very reliable but it tends to have steering and suspension problems with age. Comparable pickups are the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
Its reliable and sturdy and has good resale value.
Base model but does what it Says on the tin, real work horse with few frills. Great towing ability.
Fantastic car go anywhere reliability and comfort guaranteed
