Jaguar F-Type (2013-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Sublime styling	Only two seats
Great fun to drive	V8 drinks fuel
Relatively good value for what it is	Tiny boot in convertible models

Quick Summary

The Jaguar F-Type (2013-present) is a stunning two-seater sports car that finally gave Jaguar a true successor to its legendary E-Type. Available in both coupe and convertible forms, the F-Type offers a compelling blend of striking design, exhilarating performance, and British sporting heritage. The 2020 facelift brought significant improvements, including a sharper exterior design, updated interior, and superior infotainment system. The range spans from the accessible 2.0-litre turbocharged P300 through to the potent supercharged V8 variants, with the range-topping P575 R delivering 575bhp and four-wheel drive capability.

The F-Type's driving experience is exceptional across all powertrains, though the entry-level P300 offers better agility and responsiveness, whilst the V8 models deliver raw performance and excitement. The coupe provides a practical 299-310 litre boot, whilst the convertible's 200-233 litre capacity is still respectable. Running costs reflect its sports car nature, with the P300 achieving around 29mpg officially and the V8s returning 25-26mpg. Insurance falls into group 44 and above due to the aluminium structure's repair costs. Fixed-price servicing plans are available from Jaguar, making ownership more predictable.

Best for: Enthusiasts seeking a stylish, thrilling sports car with genuine British appeal, those wanting an alternative to Porsche or German rivals, and buyers who value striking design alongside performance.

Not ideal for: Families requiring more than two seats, those prioritising fuel economy, or buyers concerned about high insurance and repair costs for aluminium bodywork.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the F-Type if: You're seeking a stunning, thrilling sports car with genuine British appeal, want an alternative to Porsche or German rivals, or value striking design alongside exceptional performance.

Consider alternatives if: You require more than two seats, prioritise fuel economy, or are concerned about high insurance and repair costs for aluminium bodywork.

Competitive Position: The Jaguar F-Type is a worthy contender in the premium sports car market, offering sublime styling, exhilarating driving dynamics, and relatively good value compared to its rivals. Whilst the Audi TT Mk3 and Porsche 718 variants score slightly higher on CarGurus ratings, the F-Type's distinctive design, powerful engine options, and British heritage make it a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking something different. The F-Type represents a deliberate alternative to German sports cars, offering genuine character and performance at a competitive price point, particularly in the V8 variants which provide supercar-rivalling performance for significantly less money.
