Jaguar F-Type (2013-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Sublime styling	Only two seats
Great fun to drive	V8 drinks fuel
Relatively good value for what it is	Tiny boot in convertible models

Quick Summary

The Jaguar F-Type (2013-present) is a stunning two-seater sports car that finally gave Jaguar a true successor to its legendary E-Type. Available in both coupe and convertible forms, the F-Type offers a compelling blend of striking design, exhilarating performance, and genuine driving pleasure. The 2020 facelift brought significant improvements, including a sharper design with slimmer headlights, revised taillights, an updated interior, and a superior infotainment system. The range now centres on three engine options: the 2.0-litre turbocharged P300, the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 P450, and the range-topping P575 R with 575bhp and four-wheel drive.

The coupe offers a practical 299-310 litre boot, whilst the convertible provides 200-233 litres. All models come generously equipped with leather and suede sports seats, LED headlights, climate control, and a Meridian sound system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The P300 achieves around 29mpg in real-world driving, whilst the V8 models return approximately 25-26mpg. Insurance falls into group 44 and above due to the aluminium structure's repair costs. Servicing is available through Jaguar's fixed-price plans (£1,000-£1,500 for three years). The F-Type represents a worthy alternative to the Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman, offering distinctive British styling and excellent value for a high-performance sports car.

Best for: Drivers seeking a thrilling, stylish sports car with genuine character, those wanting an alternative to German rivals, and buyers who value striking design alongside performance.

Not ideal for: Families requiring more than two seats, those prioritising fuel economy, or drivers concerned about aluminium repair costs and high insurance premiums.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the F-Type if: You're seeking a thrilling, stylish sports car with genuine character, want an alternative to German rivals, or value striking design alongside performance.

Consider alternatives if: You require more than two seats, prioritise fuel economy, or are concerned about aluminium repair costs and high insurance premiums.

Competitive Position: The Jaguar F-Type is a worthy contender in the premium sports car market, offering sublime styling and exhilarating driving dynamics. Whilst the Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman edges ahead on expert rating and overall score, the F-Type delivers excellent value and distinctive British character. It outperforms the BMW Z4 E89 and matches the Audi TT Mk3 in user satisfaction. The F-Type's relatively good value proposition, combined with its striking design and performance credentials, makes it a compelling choice for those seeking a sports car that stands apart from the German establishment. The range-topping P575 R even offers supercar-rivalling performance at a fraction of the cost of alternatives like the Aston Martin Vantage.
