Jeep Renegade (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Capable of proper off-roading | Uninspired to drive on Tarmac |
| Roomy cabin | Reliability concerns |
| Eye-catching appearance | Disappointing score in Euro NCAP safety tests |
Quick Summary
The Jeep Renegade (2014-present) is a compact SUV that combines distinctive American styling with genuine off-road capability. As Jeep's smallest offering in the UK market, it competes with rivals like the Fiat 500X, Renault Captur, and Nissan Juke. The Renegade's chunky, purposeful appearance immediately evokes classic Jeep heritage, with its iconic seven-slot grille and beefy stance. Inside, there's plenty of headroom and decent space for the size, though rear legroom is somewhat cramped and boot space is merely acceptable rather than exceptional. Interior quality is mixed, with some cheap-feeling plastics offset by thoughtful design touches inspired by the Jeep grille.
On the road, the Renegade is best described as reasonable, offering solid and composed handling without excelling in driving dynamics. Steering feels artificial and distant, whilst road and wind noise could be better controlled at motorway speeds. Engine options have evolved significantly, with early petrol units (1.6-litre and 1.4-litre MultiAir) and diesels (1.6-litre and 2.0-litre) replaced after the 2018 facelift by a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol and 1.3-litre petrol engines. The 2.0-litre diesel also received a 168bhp variant. Post-facelift models feature an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus enhanced safety systems. However, Euro NCAP retesting in 2019 revealed concerning safety shortcomings, with the Renegade scoring just three stars due to inadequate active safety systems.
Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability, those wanting a spacious compact SUV, and drivers who value American iconography and character.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising on-road driving dynamics, buyers concerned about reliability and safety ratings, or drivers seeking the most refined compact SUV experience.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jeep Renegade | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.2% | 4.0/5 |
| Renault Captur | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 36.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.6% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Renegade if: You seek distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability, want a spacious compact SUV, or value American iconography and character.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road driving dynamics, are concerned about reliability and safety ratings, or require the most refined compact SUV experience.
Competitive Position: The Jeep Renegade (2014-present) occupies a unique position in the compact SUV market, offering genuine off-road capability and eye-catching styling that rivals cannot match. However, it lags behind competitors like the Renault Captur in overall refinement and safety credentials. Whilst the Renegade's roomy cabin and distinctive appearance appeal to a specific buyer, concerns about reliability and Euro NCAP's disappointing three-star safety rating are significant drawbacks. For those willing to overlook these issues in favour of character and off-road ability, the Renegade delivers; for others, the Captur or Nissan Juke may prove more sensible choices.

4.4 Overall rating
(8 reviews)I love the Jeep renegade its a fantastic little workhorse, big enough for my whole family plus a dog. Great help in winter months.
Decent car but a bit underachieving on the interior and prefer the Auto version. Good price fir the year and model
Punches well above its weight, solid quality abound. Responsive steering and a pleasure to drive- far exceeded expectations and turns heads like no other small suv.
Too many features and a handbook that is difficult to understand. On the plus side it drives nicely and is a bit different
Im like model y jeep perfect car for family
