Kia Sorento (2015-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Practical interior	Seat Tarraco is better to drive
Third-row seats are roomier than most	It's a big car to park
4WD as standard	Diesel-only engine range

Quick Summary

The Kia Sorento (2015-2019) is a solid, spacious seven-seat SUV that represents excellent value for money. This third-generation model shares its underpinnings with the Hyundai Santa Fe and rivals the Skoda Kodiaq and Seat Tarraco. It features a quality cabin with soft-touch plastics, comfortable front seats, and a well-laid-out dashboard. The second row offers generous space for three adults, whilst the third row accommodates children or occasional adult passengers. With all seats in place, the boot offers 142 litres, but folding the third row provides 660 litres, and folding all rear seats yields 1,732 litres—more than the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The Sorento is powered by a single 197bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine available with six-speed manual or automatic transmission (upgraded to eight-speed from 2018). Whilst not the most refined engine, it's adequate for the car's weight. Real-world fuel economy ranges from 30-35mpg depending on gearbox choice. The suspension prioritises comfort over engagement, making it ideal for long journeys and family use. Four-wheel drive comes as standard on all versions. Trim levels range from KX-1 to KX-4, with even entry-level models well-equipped with air-conditioning, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and parking sensors. Insurance groups range from 24-27, and servicing is due every 12 months or 20,000 miles at reasonable costs.

Best for: Families needing seven seats, caravan and boat owners seeking a capable tow car, and buyers prioritising practicality and comfort over driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Those seeking engaging handling, drivers who dislike diesel engines, or those who find large SUVs difficult to manoeuvre in tight spaces.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sorento if: You need a practical seven-seat SUV, regularly tow caravans or boats, prioritise comfort and space over driving dynamics, or seek excellent value in the premium SUV segment.

Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling like the Seat Tarraco, prefer petrol engines, or struggle with parking large vehicles.

Competitive Position: The Kia Sorento (2015-2019) is a strong contender in the seven-seat SUV market, offering exceptional practicality, comfort, and value. Whilst it may not match the Seat Tarraco for driving engagement or the Skoda Kodiaq for overall refinement, its standard four-wheel drive, spacious third row, and well-equipped cabin make it an excellent choice for families. It's particularly well-suited to those who tow regularly and appreciate a sturdy, reliable vehicle that prioritises comfort and practicality over dynamic handling. The Sorento represents outstanding value compared to premium rivals.
