Kia Sorento (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent value for a seven-seat SUV | Hybrids having lower towing limits than diesels |
| Spacious and high-quality interior | BMW and Audi rivals are better to drive |
| Wide engine range including hybrid and plug-in hybrid | Feels large and bulky to drive in towns |
Quick Summary
The Kia Sorento, in its fourth generation (introduced 2020, facelifted 2024), is a stylish and spacious seven-seat family SUV with a strong emphasis on electrification. It offers both a self-charging hybrid (HEV) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option, alongside a 2.2-litre diesel for towing. The latest Sorento boasts revised styling, an upgraded interior, and improved roominess over its predecessor, with increased legroom across all three rows and generous boot space with the third row folded.
While prioritising comfort and refinement over agility, the Sorento offers a smooth ride, especially in lower specs. The cabin is well-equipped and designed, with touchscreen infotainment systems, digital instrument clusters, and extensive safety tech across trim levels. Running costs are competitive, with the PHEV offering the lowest running costs if regularly plugged in, while the hybrid and diesel provide comparable fuel economy depending on driving style. It represents excellent value for a large SUV, offering a premium feel that rivals more expensive badges.
Best for: Families needing a spacious seven-seater, those seeking hybrid efficiency or strong towing capability (diesel), buyers prioritising comfort and practicality, those looking for a high-quality SUV without a premium badge price.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sporty handling and agility (like Audi Q5 or BMW X3), those who frequently need the third row and a large boot simultaneously, buyers who cannot regularly charge a PHEV to maximise its cost benefits.

The Verdict
You should buy the Sorento if: You're a family needing a spacious seven-seater, seeking hybrid efficiency or strong towing capability, or prioritising comfort, practicality, and a high-quality SUV without a premium badge price.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling and agility, frequently need the third row and a large boot simultaneously, or cannot regularly charge a PHEV to maximise its cost benefits.
Competitive Position: The Kia Sorento (2020-present) stands out as a highly practical and well-appointed seven-seat SUV. It offers excellent value and a premium feel that challenges more expensive rivals, particularly in terms of interior quality and space. While it may not match the dynamic driving experience of some German competitors, its focus on comfort, refinement, and diverse powertrain options – including compelling hybrids and a strong diesel – make it a formidable contender. For families prioritising space, technology, and a comprehensive warranty, the Sorento presents a compelling, modern alternative in the competitive SUV market.

4.6 Overall rating
(29 reviews)Lovely big car, very comfy and great to drive. Not as economical as the Sportage but worth it for the extra space. This is the second one Ive bought as I really enjoy the drive.
This car has got all possible futures. The ratio price/quality is amazing. One disappointment - even the dearest variant doesnt offer a driver seat massage. Ive compared Kia Sorento KX4 with Skoda Kodiaq Edition.
One of the best 7 seaters, but is to expensive for used cars.
a bit slow on the overtaking and a bit boaty
Good car with all what you need inside. Especially 4 series in nice with Sun roof. Good engines Good engineering.
