Kia Sorento (2015-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Practical interior	Seat Tarraco is better to drive
Third-row seats are roomier than most	It's a big car to park
4WD as standard	Diesel-only engine range

Quick Summary

The Kia Sorento (2015-2019) is a substantial seven-seat SUV that represents excellent value for money. This third-generation model shares its underpinnings with the Hyundai Santa Fe and rivals the Skoda Kodiaq and Seat Tarraco. It features a quality cabin with soft-touch plastics, comfortable front seats, and a well-laid-out dashboard. The second row offers generous space for three adults, whilst the third row accommodates children or occasional adult passengers. With all seats in place, the boot offers 142 litres, but folding the third row provides 660 litres, and folding all rear seats yields an impressive 1,732 litres—more than the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The Sorento is powered by a single 197bhp 2.2-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine, available with six-speed manual or automatic transmission (upgraded to eight-speed from 2018). Whilst not particularly engaging to drive, it prioritises comfort with soft suspension that absorbs road imperfections well. Real-world fuel economy ranges from 30-35mpg depending on transmission choice. Four-wheel drive comes as standard on all versions, making it an excellent tow car. The trim range spans from well-equipped KX-1 through to KX-4, with all models featuring substantial standard equipment including touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Insurance falls within groups 24-27, and servicing is due every 12 months or 20,000 miles at reasonable cost.

Best for: Families needing seven seats, caravan and boat owners, those prioritising practicality and comfort over driving dynamics, and buyers seeking a sturdy, reliable SUV with excellent towing capability.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling, those with limited parking space, or buyers preferring petrol engine options or superior driving dynamics like the Seat Tarraco.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sorento if: You need seven seats, prioritise practicality and comfort, require a capable tow car, or seek a sturdy, reliable family SUV with excellent value.

Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling, have limited parking space, prefer petrol engines, or want superior driving dynamics like the Seat Tarraco.

Competitive Position: The Kia Sorento (2015-2019) is a strong contender in the seven-seat SUV market, offering exceptional practicality, comfort, and value. Whilst it lacks the driving engagement of rivals like the Seat Tarraco and doesn't match the Skoda Kodiaq's refinement, its standard four-wheel drive, spacious third row, and well-equipped cabin make it an excellent choice for families. It's particularly suited to those regularly towing caravans or boats. As a used purchase, the Sorento represents outstanding value, combining reliability, practicality, and comfort for long-distance family journeys.
