The Kia Ceed (2012-2018), the second-generation mid-sized family hatchback, marked a significant improvement over its predecessor. Much better looking inside and out, well equipped, and decent to drive, it could withstand direct comparison with established rivals such as the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. The Ceed was now a properly desirable car, not just a sensible, budget-conscious choice. Three-door versions were badged Pro_Ceed, whilst the estate was known as the Ceed Sportswagon or SW. The car is spacious enough for five adults, with a 380-litre boot expandable to 1,318 litres with the rear seats folded, or 528 litres in the estate version expanding to 1,660 litres.

Except for the GT model, the Ceed isn't the most enthralling to drive; steering is over-assisted and engines lack verve. However, it cruises quietly with a comfortable ride, making it unfussy daily transport. Engine options include 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol units, a turbocharged 1.6 for the GT model producing 198bhp, and diesel engines with 89bhp to 134bhp. The most fuel-efficient version is the 1.6 CRDi diesel, achieving around 55mpg, whilst the 1.0-litre turbo petrol manages approximately 40mpg. Standard equipment is generous, with even entry-level models featuring air-conditioning, six airbags, and Bluetooth connectivity. Servicing and repair costs are very reasonable, with Kia offering service plans to help guard against price inflation.
