Range Rover Velar (2017-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Effortless and refined performance	Iffy reliability record
Stylish and imposing looks	Top-spec models are expensive
Plug-in hybrid is affordable to run if recharged regularly	A Porsche Macan S is sharper to drive and more affordable

Quick Summary

The Range Rover Velar (2017-present) is a stylish and sophisticated mid-size premium SUV that sits between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport. Launched in 2017 and updated in 2023, it offers an appealing blend of luxury, comfort, and capability. With 632 litres of boot space, a commanding driving position with 14-way adjustable seats, and an array of plush materials, the Velar delivers an upmarket experience. The 2023 facelift introduced the improved Pivi Pro infotainment system, making it significantly more user-friendly than earlier models.

The Velar excels in delivering effortless, refined driving dynamics with smooth engines and responsive eight-speed automatic transmission. Air suspension is available and highly recommended for its pillowy ride comfort. Diesel variants achieve around 40mpg in real-world driving, whilst the plug-in hybrid P400e offers 40 miles of electric-only range post-facelift. However, potential buyers should be aware of the Velar's iffy reliability record and high running costs, including insurance and VED premiums. Top-spec models can rival more upmarket alternatives in price, and rivals like the Porsche Macan offer sharper handling.

Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable, and well-equipped premium SUV with genuine off-road credentials, those prioritising luxury and refinement, and drivers interested in plug-in hybrid technology.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those concerned about reliability, drivers prioritising sharp handling dynamics, or those seeking the best value in the premium SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Velar if: You value stylish design, luxury, and refinement, seek a premium SUV with genuine off-road capability, or are interested in plug-in hybrid technology with low running costs when regularly recharged.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling and driving dynamics, are concerned about reliability, require the best value proposition, or prefer a larger, more spacious rear cabin.

Competitive Position: The Range Rover Velar is an appealing and well-equipped premium SUV that delivers effortless refinement and striking styling. However, it faces stiff competition in a crowded segment. The BMW X5 offers superior reliability and higher ratings, whilst the Porsche Macan provides sharper driving dynamics at a comparable price. The Audi Q5 delivers better value and practicality. The Velar's main strengths lie in its distinctive design, comfortable interior, and Land Rover's off-road expertise, making it ideal for buyers prioritising style and luxury over outright value or performance.
