MG MG5 (2020-2025) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
One of the most affordable EVs on the market	Lots of body lean when cornering
Spacious and practical	Slow charging speeds for early models
Very low running costs	Unfashionable shape and styling

Quick Summary

The MG MG5 (2020-2025) is the UK's only affordable all-electric estate car, offering no-nonsense value and family-friendly practicality. Similar in size to a Volkswagen Golf Estate yet significantly cheaper than rivals like the Citroën e-C4 and Volkswagen ID.3, it carved out a unique niche in the market. The final version used a 61.1kWh battery and 154bhp electric motor, delivering an official range of 249 miles and real-world figures around 220 miles. A major facelift in 2022 brought sharper styling, a revised cabin and updated infotainment, whilst maintaining the original formula of simplicity, practicality and value for money.

The MG5's greatest strength is its practicality. With 479 litres of boot space (or 1,367 litres with rear seats folded), it easily outpaces similarly priced electric hatchbacks. The cabin is spacious with generous legroom and headroom, plus two Isofix points for child seats. Running costs are impressively low, with DC rapid charging reaching 10-80% in around 35 minutes. A seven-year/80,000-mile warranty, transferable to future owners, provides valuable peace of mind. Whilst driving dynamics are unremarkable and styling unfashionable, the MG5 remains an exceptionally practical and affordable electric estate car for families seeking sensible zero-emission motoring.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking practical, spacious electric transport; families needing genuine estate-car boot space; those prioritising value and low running costs over premium styling or dynamic handling.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium badge appeal, engaging driving dynamics, or the latest infotainment technology; those with early models requiring faster charging capabilities.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the MG5 if: You're budget-conscious and seeking practical, spacious electric transport; a family needing genuine estate-car boot space; or prioritising value and low running costs over premium styling or dynamic handling.

Consider alternatives if: You desire premium badge appeal, engaging driving dynamics, the latest infotainment technology, or faster charging speeds on early models.

Competitive Position: The MG MG5 (2020-2025) stands out as the most affordable electric estate car on the used market, offering exceptional practicality and value. Whilst the Volkswagen ID.3 and Kia Niro match its overall ratings, neither offers the spacious estate-car format or comparable affordability. The Citroën C4 provides an alternative, but the MG5's lower price point and superior boot space make it the sensible choice for families prioritising practicality and budget. Its unfashionable styling and unremarkable dynamics are minor compromises for such genuine utility and economy.
