Nice smooth ride, Im not someone who needs to be the first away from the traffic lights but it picks up speed in a smoothly unfussy way and the ride is comfortable.

This is an ideal family estate car which has everything you need except the ability to tow a caravan or a trailer with a nose weight greater than 40 kg

My first drive in an ev and I was impressed. Quiet, comfortable , roomy for an estate car. Easy to drive and lots of acceleration when needed. I bought a 71 pre face lift model with medium range battery as the saving over the new one was huge. Its a very discrete car, it doesnt scream ev from its appearance. It has good load space, decent room for rear passengers and ample range for my journeys unless going a long way on holiday.

MG MG5 (2020-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the most affordable EVs on the market | Lots of body lean when cornering |
| Spacious and practical | Slow charging speeds for early models |
| Very low running costs | Unfashionable shape and styling |
Quick Summary
The MG MG5 (2020-2025) is the UK's only affordable electric estate car, offering no-nonsense value and family-friendly practicality. Similar in size to a Volkswagen Golf Estate yet significantly cheaper than rivals like the Citroën e-C4 and Volkswagen ID.3, it carved out a unique niche in the market. The final version featured a 61.1kWh battery, 154bhp electric motor, and an official range of 249 miles with real-world figures around 220 miles. A major facelift in 2022 brought sharper styling, a revised cabin, and updated infotainment, whilst maintaining its core formula of simplicity, practicality, and value for money.
The MG5's greatest strength is its practicality. With 479 litres of boot space (or 1,367 litres with rear seats folded), it easily outpaces similarly priced electric hatchbacks. The cabin is basic but well-equipped, with impressive features across both SE and Trophy trims. Running costs are exceptionally low, with DC rapid charging supporting 10-80% top-ups in around 35 minutes. The seven-year/80,000-mile warranty, transferable to future owners, provides valuable peace of mind. Although MG has ceased production, the MG5 remains an appealing option for families seeking a sensibly priced EV with more space than most small electric SUVs.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable EV, families needing practical estate-car space, and those prioritising value and low running costs over premium styling.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium badge appeal, those wanting engaging driving dynamics, or those requiring fast charging on early models with the 52.2kWh battery.

The Verdict
You should buy the MG5 if: You're seeking an affordable EV with practical estate-car space, prioritising value and low running costs, or needing a sensible family electric car without premium styling.
Consider alternatives if: You want premium badge appeal, engaging driving dynamics, or require fast charging on early models with the smaller battery.
Competitive Position: The MG MG5 (2020-2025) stands out as the best-value electric estate car on the used market by a comfortable margin. Whilst it may lack the premium appeal of the Volkswagen ID.3 or the dynamic handling of the Kia Niro, its combination of affordability, practicality, and low running costs makes it an exceptionally sensible choice for budget-conscious families. The spacious boot, impressive equipment levels, and transferable seven-year warranty further strengthen its appeal. Although MG has ceased production, the MG5 remains one of the most practical and affordable electric cars available used.
