MG MG5 (2020-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the most affordable EVs on the market | Lots of body lean when cornering |
| Spacious and practical | Slow charging speeds for early models |
| Very low running costs | Unfashionable shape and styling |
Quick Summary
The MG MG5 (2020-2025) carved out a unique niche as the UK's only electric estate car at its 2020 launch, offering exceptional value and family-friendly practicality. It provides ample space, with a 479-litre boot (578 litres to the roof) and comfortable room for adults, making it ideal for carrying children, dogs, or luggage. Powered by a 61.1kWh battery in its final iteration, it delivered an official range of 249 miles (around 220 real-world) and supported 87kW rapid charging, making it a practical and affordable EV alternative to pricier crossovers.
A 2022 facelift updated its styling, cabin, and infotainment, but the MG5 maintained its focus on simplicity, practicality, and value. While its driving experience is unassuming with noticeable body-roll, it offers a comfortable ride and respectable range. Now available solely as a used car, its low running costs, decent range, and a transferable seven-year/80,000-mile warranty make it a highly appealing option for budget-conscious families seeking a spacious electric vehicle.
Best for: Budget-conscious EV buyers, families needing spacious and practical electric transport, those wanting an affordable electric estate car with a long warranty.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium interior finishes, sporty driving dynamics, or cutting-edge design and infotainment (pre-facelift models).

4.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Nice smooth ride, Im not someone who needs to be the first away from the traffic lights but it picks up speed in a smoothly unfussy way and the ride is comfortable.
This is an ideal family estate car which has everything you need except the ability to tow a caravan or a trailer with a nose weight greater than 40 kg
My first drive in an ev and I was impressed. Quiet, comfortable , roomy for an estate car. Easy to drive and lots of acceleration when needed. I bought a 71 pre face lift model with medium range battery as the saving over the new one was huge. Its a very discrete car, it doesnt scream ev from its appearance. It has good load space, decent room for rear passengers and ample range for my journeys unless going a long way on holiday.
For the price and utility it is top dog. Unless you wish to lose a fortune in money on a porche estate then the best choice is the MG 5. I like the driving position, comfort and the drive. I can actually easily tell between the drive modes and comfort settings. It is nippy enough with a sub 8 second 0 to 60. The kit fitted is fine, it doesnt have all the bells and whistles of some of the others, but in my book that means less to go wrong, and there is a trade off between price and options. I have tried the Mach-e from Ford and it is too easy to lose your licence, same with the I-pace from Jaguar, they both are not comfy enough. Oh they have all the kit, but you pay through the nose.
A no-none sense electric car with a battery-pack offering a good range
