MG MG5 (2020-2025) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
One of the most affordable EVs on the market	Lots of body lean when cornering
Spacious and practical	Slow charging speeds for early models
Very low running costs	Unfashionable shape and styling

Quick Summary

The MG MG5 (2020-2025) is a practical and affordable electric estate car that occupied a unique niche as the UK's only all-electric estate when launched. Powered by a 61.1kWh battery and 154bhp electric motor, it delivers an official range of 249 miles with real-world figures around 220 miles. The 2022 facelift brought sharper styling, an updated cabin and improved infotainment, whilst maintaining the original formula of simplicity, practicality and value for money. With 479 litres of boot space (or 1,367 litres with seats folded), it offers exceptional practicality for families, and supports rapid charging from 10-80% in around 35 minutes.

The MG5 drives in an unassuming, sensible manner with a soft ride and competent handling, though it prioritises comfort over sportiness. Equipment levels are impressive across both SE and Trophy trims, featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise control and comprehensive driver assistance systems. Running costs are exceptionally low, with charging costs significantly cheaper than petrol or diesel equivalents. The seven-year/80,000-mile warranty (transferable to future owners) provides valuable peace of mind. As a used buy, the MG5 represents outstanding value as the most affordable electric estate car on the market, though it may lose value faster than more desirable EVs.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking practical electric transport, families needing spacious boot capacity, and those wanting low running costs with genuine estate-car versatility.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium styling, dynamic handling, or rapid charging on earlier models with the 52.2kWh battery.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the MG5 if: You're seeking budget-friendly electric transport, need practical boot space for families, or want exceptionally low running costs with genuine estate-car versatility.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium styling, dynamic handling, or require rapid charging on earlier models with the smaller battery.

Competitive Position: The MG MG5 (2020-2025) is the most affordable electric estate car on the used market, offering outstanding value and practicality. Whilst rivals like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Kia Niro score marginally higher on expert ratings and overall appeal, the MG5's spacious boot, low running costs and comprehensive warranty make it an exceptionally sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers. The Citroen C4 offers similar value but lacks the estate-car practicality. For families prioritising space and affordability over premium styling, the MG5 remains unbeatable in its segment.
