Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Head-turning looks, inside and out | Skyactiv-X engine is sophisticated, but sluggish in the mid-range |
| Good to drive | Rear legroom is in short supply |
| Choice of front- and four-wheel drive | Boot is small and lacks clever features |
Quick Summary
The Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) is a compact SUV that prioritises style and a premium feel over outright practicality. Based on the excellent Mazda3 hatchback, it boasts a head-turning exterior design and a minimalist, high-quality cabin that could rival premium brands. All models are generously equipped, featuring a head-up display and an intuitive infotainment system. However, its stylish, coupe-like roofline comes at a cost to practicality; rear legroom is tight for adults, and its 430-litre boot is smaller than key rivals.
Engine choice is limited to two 2.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol units, which deliver reasonable real-world economy of around 40mpg. While the advanced Skyactiv-X engine promises diesel-like efficiency, neither option feels particularly powerful and can be noisy when pushed. Where the CX-30 shines is on the road, offering responsive steering, a smooth ride, and one of the best manual gearboxes in its class. It’s an enjoyable and refined car to drive, making it a compelling choice for those who value design and driving pleasure.
Best for: Style-conscious buyers who want a premium-feeling cabin and an engaging driving experience, and are happy to trade some space for it.
Not ideal for: Families needing maximum rear passenger space or a large, versatile boot for holidays and luggage.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda CX-30 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.5% | 4.2/5 |
| Skoda Karoq | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 31.1% | 4.6/5 |
| Seat Ateca | 4/5 | 4.1/5 | 31.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the CX-30 if: You want a car that stands out from the crowd, feels genuinely premium inside, and is enjoyable to drive on a country road.
Consider alternatives if: Your priorities are maximum practicality, generous space for rear passengers, or punchy engine performance.
Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-30 is a highly desirable compact SUV that competes on style and quality rather than space. While it can’t match the practicality of rivals like the Skoda Karoq, it offers a more premium feel and a more engaging drive than many alternatives. For buyers who don't need a huge boot or sprawling rear seats, the CX-30’s blend of beautiful design, high-quality interior and driver appeal makes it a very strong contender.

4.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)The car is superb. Mazda quality is unbelievable for the money. The exclusive line has everything you need. So much you might want to turn one or two of the assistance modes off. I love the centre consul dials. So easy to use on the move. They soon become effortless and the screen is so clear. Loads of room for me and my wife. Very very comfortable once you relax in to it. The X engine in two wheel drive form is an absolute joy. Quick and responsive at the right revs. That leaves the clutch and gear box one word. Superb. The words I would use in summary are Top Quality and great to drive. The Bose us awesome. A lot of cars these days have huge unnecessary screens that do nothing particularly well and are a pain to use. They dont even look good. Go look as a Mazda they have it right. This car is for couples and small families To compare it to a full SUV would be unfair. It is part SUV so a crossover. Dont let that put you off Go drive it. Its a dream.
Very good value the features on it are excellent the boot could be bigger thou
The car is very well built, comfortable and very stylish inside and out!The amount of tech it comes with is mind blowing. I consider it great value for money. Would I recommend it, yes I would. Would I buy another, yes I would.
I chino the modelo la hice and safe I can compare with toyota maker
An amazing deal for my trade-in and an excellent price for the cx30. It’s Packed with exciting features but not quite as nice to drive as my previous Mazda 6 estate.
