Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Head-turning looks, inside and out | Skyactiv-X engine is sophisticated, but sluggish in the mid-range |
| Good to drive | Rear legroom is in short supply |
| Choice of front- and four-wheel drive | Boot is small and lacks clever features |
Quick Summary
The Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) is a stylish compact SUV that sits between the Mazda3 hatchback and the larger CX-5. Based on the Mazda3 platform but with a shorter wheelbase, it delivers head-turning design both inside and out. The minimalist cabin is exceptionally well-made with BMW-quality craftsmanship, whilst all models feature a head-up display and an intuitive rotary dial infotainment system. Two 2.0-litre petrol engines are available: the older Skyactiv-G (120bhp) and the more advanced Skyactiv-X (178bhp) with compression ignition technology, offering diesel-like economy at around 40mpg in real-world driving.
The CX-30 is a pleasure to drive with responsive steering, smooth ride quality, and lively handling, plus one of the best manual gearshifts in its class. However, the Skyactiv-X engine is disappointingly sluggish in the mid-range and requires hard driving to deliver full performance. Rear legroom is limited due to the shorter wheelbase, and the 430-litre boot lacks practical features like sliding seats or a fully flat floor. All trim levels are generously equipped with automatic headlights, adaptive cruise control, and air-conditioning. A six-speed automatic gearbox is available, as is Mazda's i-Activ all-wheel drive system.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, well-made compact SUV with engaging driving dynamics, those who value design and interior quality, and drivers wanting a choice of front- or four-wheel drive.
Not ideal for: Families needing generous rear legroom or boot space, those prioritising mid-range engine performance, or buyers seeking maximum practicality in a compact SUV.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda CX-30 | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.6% | 4.1/5 |
| Skoda Karoq | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 29.3% | 4.5/5 |
| Seat Ateca | 4/5 | 3.8/5 | 35.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.3% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the CX-30 if: You value stylish design and quality interior craftsmanship, seek engaging driving dynamics, or want a compact SUV with flexible drivetrain options.
Consider alternatives if: You need generous rear legroom or boot space, prioritise mid-range engine performance, or require maximum practicality in a compact SUV.
Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-30 (2019-present) is a distinctive choice in the compact SUV segment, excelling in design, build quality, and driving enjoyment. Whilst the Skoda Karoq offers superior practicality and space, and the Volvo XC40 provides premium appeal, the CX-30 stands out for those prioritising style and driving engagement. The Seat Ateca offers better value for money. The CX-30's main drawbacks—limited rear legroom, modest boot, and mid-range engine sluggishness—are offset by its exceptional looks, well-crafted interior, and responsive handling, making it ideal for design-conscious buyers willing to compromise on space.

(3 reviews)Very good value the features on it are excellent the boot could be bigger thou
The car is very well built, comfortable and very stylish inside and out!The amount of tech it comes with is mind blowing. I consider it great value for money. Would I recommend it, yes I would. Would I buy another, yes I would.
The car is superb. Mazda quality is unbelievable for the money. The exclusive line has everything you need. So much you might want to turn one or two of the assistance modes off. I love the centre consul dials. So easy to use on the move. They soon become effortless and the screen is so clear. Loads of room for me and my wife. Very very comfortable once you relax in to it. The X engine in two wheel drive form is an absolute joy. Quick and responsive at the right revs. That leaves the clutch and gear box one word. Superb. The words I would use in summary are Top Quality and great to drive. The Bose us awesome. A lot of cars these days have huge unnecessary screens that do nothing particularly well and are a pain to use. They dont even look good. Go look as a Mazda they have it right. This car is for couples and small families To compare it to a full SUV would be unfair. It is part SUV so a crossover. Dont let that put you off Go drive it. Its a dream.
