Mazda6 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enjoyable to drive | Not as roomy as the Skoda Superb |
| One of the most reliable big family cars | Petrol engines need a lot of revs |
| Lots of standard equipment | No plug-in hybrid |
Quick Summary
The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is the third generation of Mazda's family saloon and estate, featuring the manufacturer's own platform and engines rather than Ford-based underpinnings. It's brilliant to drive, borrowing characteristics from the MX-5 sports car, making it far more engaging than typical saloons or estates. Both the saloon and Tourer (estate) comfortably accommodate four tall adults, though the saloon's 480-litre boot has a narrow opening. The Tourer's 522-litre estate boot is more practical, with flat-folding rear seats, though rivals like the Skoda Superb offer even greater capacity.
The Mazda6 launched with 2.0-litre petrol (143bhp or 163bhp) or 2.2-litre turbodiesel (148bhp or 173bhp) engines. The lower-powered diesel is gutsy and efficient, achieving around 50mpg in real-world driving, whilst the 2.0-litre petrol manages approximately 40mpg. Sharp handling and crisp steering make it brilliant out of town. Equipment levels are generous, with even entry-level trims featuring Bluetooth, USB charging, alloy wheels, and parking sensors. From 2015, a seven-inch touchscreen became standard, improved further in 2016 with a rotary controller. The 2019 update brought an eight-inch screen. As a used buy, the Mazda6 represents fantastic value due to steep depreciation, offering reliability, practicality, and enjoyment for less than most alternatives.
Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging, reliable family car with excellent value, those prioritising driving enjoyment, and budget-conscious buyers wanting a spacious saloon or estate.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum interior space (like the Skoda Superb), those needing plug-in hybrid options, or drivers wanting a broader range of engine and gearbox choices.

The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda6 if: You're seeking an engaging, reliable family car with excellent value, prioritise driving enjoyment, or want a spacious saloon or estate on a budget.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space, need plug-in hybrid options, or want a broader range of engine and gearbox choices.
Competitive Position: The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a seriously good family car that's spacious, affordable, well-equipped, safe, and hardy. Whilst fresher rivals like the Skoda Superb offer more space and a broader engine range, the Mazda6 excels as a used buy. Steep depreciation means fantastic deals on second-hand examples, promising reliability, effortless driving, and likability for less than most alternatives. Its engaging driving dynamics set it apart from more conventional competitors, making it an excellent choice for those valuing enjoyment alongside practicality.

4.4 Overall rating
(14 reviews)Executive car. People turn too look at it, especially in white. Gorgeous rims. I love this car. Runs great, easy to have a good mpg average but at the same time it flies when you press the pedal.
Smashing car , good drive and great fuel consumption
Amazing car, plain petrol ,plenty of power and the colour is amazing Soul red
I have test driven a diesel model which I find a little sluggish! It was a 2L engine. I may go for the petrol engine next time. Maybe a 2.5L diesel might be a bit more responsive but I would go for a petrol engine (2Litre)
Its a lovely car, but the paintwork is badly chipped. It turns out that there is a problem with this actual colour. It was applied too thinly. Also, budget tyres on all four corners...one with an obvious slow puncture. Chips to the windscreen.
