Executive car. People turn too look at it, especially in white. Gorgeous rims. I love this car. Runs great, easy to have a good mpg average but at the same time it flies when you press the pedal.

Mazda6 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enjoyable to drive | Not as roomy as the Skoda Superb |
| One of the most reliable big family cars | Petrol engines need a lot of revs |
| Lots of standard equipment | No plug-in hybrid |
Quick Summary
The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is the third generation of Mazda's family saloon and estate, featuring the manufacturer's own platform and engines rather than Ford-based components. It's brilliant to drive, borrowing characteristics from the MX-5 sports car, making it far more engaging than typical saloons or estates. The car is spacious enough for four tall adults on long journeys, though the saloon's 480-litre boot is narrower than rivals. The Tourer estate variant offers a more practical 522-litre boot with flat-folding rear seats, though the Skoda Superb Estate provides even greater capacity at 660 litres.
The Mazda6 launched with 2.0-litre petrol engines (143bhp or 163bhp) and 2.2-litre turbodiesel options (148bhp or 173bhp), with the lower-powered diesel being particularly efficient and ULEZ exempt. Real-world economy reaches around 50mpg from manual diesel models and 40mpg from the 2.0-litre petrol. Equipment levels are generous across the range, with the 2016 model onwards featuring a seven-inch touchscreen with rotary controller, upgraded to eight inches from 2019. The Mazda6 represents exceptional value as a used buy due to steep depreciation, though rivals like the Skoda Superb offer more space and a broader engine range. In January 2023, Mazda ceased UK sales of the Mazda6 due to declining saloon popularity.
Best for: Drivers seeking an enjoyable, reliable, and well-equipped family car with excellent value, and those prioritising driving dynamics over maximum interior space.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum rear legroom or boot space, those wanting plug-in hybrid options, or those needing the broadest engine and gearbox choices.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda6 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.8% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen Passat | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Skoda Superb | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.5% | 4.4/5 |
| Ford Mondeo Mk4 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 30.3% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda6 if: You're seeking an enjoyable, reliable, and well-equipped family car with exceptional value, and you prioritise driving dynamics over maximum interior space.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear legroom or boot space, want plug-in hybrid options, or need the broadest engine and gearbox choices.
Competitive Position: The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a seriously good family car that's spacious, affordable, well equipped, safe, and hardy. It's also great to drive. As a used buy, the steep initial depreciation means there are fantastic deals on second-hand examples, promising reliability and likability for less than most obvious alternatives. Whilst rivals such as the Skoda Superb offer more space and a broader engine range, the Mazda6's engaging driving dynamics and excellent value make it a compelling choice for those prioritising enjoyment alongside practicality.
