Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Serene and soothing comfort | Expensive for private buyers |
| Broad range of engine options | Bewildering array of trims and options |
| Traditional feel with high-tech equipment | E450 d is astonishingly expensive |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a traditional executive saloon that sits between the smaller C-Class and larger S-Class limousine. This 2025 model combines understated quality with cutting-edge technology, offering an impressive range of powertrains including petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options. The E-Class delivers a serene driving experience with excellent comfort, sophisticated interior design, and practical boot space. Its plug-in hybrid variants provide an official electric range of around 70 miles for the saloon, making them particularly attractive for company car users with low benefit-in-kind tax implications.
The E-Class differentiates itself from rivals like the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 through its traditional, stately feel and impressively varied diesel engine range. It features the impressive MBUX Superscreen technology on higher trims, offering exceptional graphics and functionality. However, the model range is complex with five trim levels and numerous options, which can be overwhelming. For private buyers, the high list prices make it less compelling, though the plug-in hybrid models offer genuine appeal for those seeking low running costs and environmental credentials. The E450 d six-cylinder diesel is particularly expensive but offers smooth, muscular performance.
Best for: Company car users seeking low tax costs through plug-in hybrid technology, drivers prioritising comfort and refinement, and those wanting a broad choice of engine options including traditional diesels.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious private buyers, those seeking sporty handling comparable to the BMW 5 Series, or customers who prefer simpler model ranges with fewer options.

The Verdict
You should buy the E-Class if: You're a company car user seeking low tax costs through plug-in hybrid technology, prioritise comfort and refinement, or want a broad choice of engine options including traditional diesels.
Consider alternatives if: You're a budget-conscious private buyer, seek sporty handling comparable to the BMW 5 Series, or prefer simpler model ranges with fewer options.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2025) is a strong contender in the executive saloon market, offering exceptional comfort, a traditional stately feel, and an impressive range of powertrains. Whilst the BMW 5 Series edges ahead with slightly better handling dynamics and the Audi A6 offers comparable features, the E-Class distinguishes itself through its varied diesel engine options and plug-in hybrid technology. The Lexus ES, though cheaper and offering excellent value, is slightly smaller and lacks the diesel options. For company car users, the E-Class plug-in hybrids make compelling sense. For private buyers, high list prices mean alternatives may offer better value, though the E-Class remains an excellent choice for those prioritising comfort and refinement over sportiness.

What people say
The car drives just as it should and I am glad I got it
The car is an E240, petrol, 2.6 6 litre Auto. Great looking car for its age, beautiful profile. Interior is classically designed, and no cup holders...I dont think they were thought of back then. Quality leather, nice unassuming wood trim, comfortable seats, and as an auto gears have seamless shift. It feels superbly put together, everything is solid, quality plastics too. Huge boot. Lovely to drive, smooth, quiet. Had it 5 years, enjoyed every minute of my ownership. New in 2005 it was £33,000, I bought it for £4000....you get an awful lot of car for that. Highly recommended.
Probably the best Mercedes in all it’s classes, not too small and not to big; just perfect.
This is an amazingly smooth and quiet ride with plenty of power when needed, but great on fuel also.
