Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Serene and soothing comfort	Expensive for private buyers
Broad range of engine options	Bewildering array of trims and options
Traditional feel with high-tech equipment	E450 d is astonishingly expensive

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2024-present) is a traditional executive saloon that sits between the smaller C-Class and larger S-Class limousine. It competes directly with the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6, offering a serene blend of comfort and sophistication without feeling overly soft. The E-Class differentiates itself with an impressively varied engine range, including petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options—a breadth of choice unmatched by rivals. The plug-in hybrid models offer an official electric range of around 70 miles for the saloon and 68 miles for the estate, making them particularly attractive for company car users with low Benefit-in-Kind tax costs.

The current generation features cutting-edge technology, including the optional MBUX Superscreen—a curved dashboard display that rivals the flagship EQS. Boot space is generous at 370 litres for the hybrid saloon and 460 litres for the hybrid estate, with non-hybrid models offering 540 and 615 litres respectively. Whilst the E-Class prioritises comfort and grandeur over sporty handling, it delivers a refined, long-legged ride ideal for motorway cruising. List prices are competitive with rivals, though high costs mean plug-in hybrids offer better value as company cars than for private buyers.

Best for: Company car users seeking low tax costs, those prioritising comfort and refinement over sporty handling, and buyers wanting a broad choice of engine options including diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Not ideal for: Private buyers on a tight budget, those seeking the sportiest handling in the executive saloon class, or buyers wanting a simpler, less complex trim and options structure.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the E-Class if: You're a company car user seeking low tax costs, prioritise comfort and refinement, or want a broad choice of engine options including diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Consider alternatives if: You're a private buyer on a tight budget, seeking the sportiest handling in the executive saloon class, or want a simpler trim and options structure.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2024-present) is a highly competitive executive saloon that differentiates itself through its varied engine range and traditional, stately feel. Whilst the BMW 5 Series offers sportier handling and the Audi A6 provides excellent value with more good/great deals available, the E-Class excels in comfort and refinement. For company car users, the plug-in hybrid models make compelling sense with their low official CO2 emissions and long electric range. As a private purchase, however, high list prices make rivals more attractive unless you specifically value the E-Class's serene driving experience and broad powertrain options.
