Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-2025) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Impressive practicality and space	Not especially engaging to drive
Seven seats when most rivals have five	Third-row seats are best suited to children
Excellent MBUX infotainment system	Versions on larger wheels have a firm ride

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-2025) is a premium compact SUV that prioritises practicality over fashion. Unlike many rivals that favour sleek styling and coupe-like proportions, the GLB features a tall, upright and deliberately boxy design that maximises cabin space and visibility. Based on the same underpinnings as the A-Class and B-Class, it combines relatively compact dimensions with a surprisingly spacious interior. The standout feature is its seven-seat layout, which is still relatively unusual at this size and price point, making the GLB more versatile than competitors like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1.

The GLB delivers excellent practicality with 570 litres of boot space in five-seat configuration, expanding to 1,805 litres with seats folded. The impressive MBUX infotainment system features dual 10.25-inch widescreen displays, offering a modern feel and intuitive operation. Driving dynamics are comfortable and relaxed rather than sporty, with good ride comfort and excellent visibility. Diesel engines, particularly the GLB 200d, offer around 50mpg efficiency, whilst petrol models deliver around 40mpg. The optional 4Matic four-wheel-drive system improves traction in poor weather, and the previously available AMG GLB 35 4Matic provided a more performance-focused alternative with over 300bhp.

Best for: Family buyers seeking seven-seat practicality, those prioritising space and visibility over driving engagement, and buyers wanting premium ambiance with genuine versatility.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging or sporty driving experience, those wanting a more fashion-led design, or buyers on a tight budget.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the GLB-Class if: You're a family buyer seeking seven-seat practicality, prioritising space and visibility over driving engagement, or wanting premium ambiance with genuine versatility.

Consider alternatives if: You seek an engaging or sporty driving experience, prefer a more fashion-led design, or are on a tight budget.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a compelling choice in the premium compact SUV market, standing out through its focus on practicality rather than fashion. Whilst rivals like the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 prioritise sleek styling, the GLB's boxy, G-Class-inspired design delivers superior cabin space and the unique advantage of seven seats. The impressive MBUX infotainment system, strong safety credentials and premium interior quality make it an excellent family SUV. However, it lacks the driving engagement of sportier alternatives and commands a higher price point than mainstream competitors. For buyers valuing space, practicality and premium feel over driving dynamics, the GLB represents an outstanding choice.
