Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-2025) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Impressive practicality and space	Not especially engaging to drive
Seven seats when most rivals have five	Third-row seats are best suited to children
Excellent MBUX infotainment system	Versions on larger wheels have a firm ride

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-2025) is a premium compact SUV that prioritises practicality and family-friendly design over fashion-led styling. Based on the same platform as the A-Class and B-Class, the GLB combines relatively compact dimensions with a surprisingly spacious cabin. Its tall, upright and deliberately boxy design—reminiscent of the iconic G-Class—maximises interior space, visibility and usability. Uniquely for its class, the GLB offers optional seven-seat seating, making it significantly more versatile than many rivals like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1.

The GLB impresses with its impressive MBUX infotainment system featuring dual 10.25-inch widescreen displays, strong safety credentials and a premium-feeling interior. Practicality is a standout strength, with five-seat versions offering 570 litres of boot space expanding to 1,805 litres with seats folded. Diesel engines deliver around 50mpg, whilst petrol models achieve approximately 40mpg. The optional 4Matic four-wheel-drive system enhances traction in poor weather, and the previously available AMG GLB 35 4Matic provided a surprisingly rapid alternative with over 300bhp.

Best for: Family buyers seeking maximum practicality, those requiring seven-seat capacity without compromising on premium quality, and drivers prioritising space and visibility over sporty handling.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking an engaging driving experience, those wanting a sleek, fashion-led design, or drivers who prefer a firmer ride on standard suspension setups.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the GLB-Class if: You're a family buyer seeking maximum practicality, require seven-seat capacity without compromising on premium quality, or prioritise space and visibility over sporty handling.

Consider alternatives if: You seek an engaging driving experience, prefer sleek, fashion-led design, or desire a firmer ride on standard suspension setups.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a compelling choice in the premium compact SUV segment, offering a unique combination of practicality and seven-seat versatility that most rivals cannot match. Whilst the Land Rover Discovery Sport and BMW X1 score marginally higher on user ratings, the GLB's focus on family-friendly design, impressive MBUX technology and excellent interior space make it a standout option for practical buyers. The Audi Q3, though stylish, lacks the GLB's seven-seat option. The GLB's boxy design may lack visual flair, but it delivers exactly what family buyers need: usable space, premium quality and genuine versatility.
