Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressive practicality and space | Panoramic sunroof reduces headroom |
| Seven seats when most rivals have five | Not as capable off road as a Land Rover Discovery Sport |
| Wow-factor of MBUX infotainment system | The AMG model is a bit OTT |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-present) is a practical and spacious compact SUV that fills the gap between the GLA and GLC models. With its upright, functional design and seven-seat configuration, it prioritises practicality over style, offering what customers have moved into SUVs to find. The GLB is spun off from the same underpinnings as the A-Class and B-Class, providing excellent interior space in a relatively small footprint. Its MBUX infotainment system is industry-leading, featuring configurable screens and intuitive controls that set it apart from rivals.
To drive, the GLB is pragmatic and competent rather than thrilling, with commendable ride quality, adequate engine performance, and assured steering and braking. Fuel economy is respectable, with the 200d diesel achieving 49.6mpg and the petrol GLB 200 returning 39.2mpg. Running costs are reasonable for a premium badge, with retained values higher than mainstream rivals. The range-topping Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4Matic offers 302bhp for those seeking more excitement, though servicing and maintenance costs are considerably higher. All-wheel drive is available but the GLB is not designed for serious off-road capability.
Best for: Family buyers seeking maximum practicality and space, those wanting seven seats in a compact SUV, and drivers who value cutting-edge technology and premium quality.
Not ideal for: Off-road enthusiasts, buyers prioritising driving excitement, or those concerned about reduced headroom with a panoramic sunroof fitted.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise serious off-road capability, driving excitement, or wish to avoid reduced headroom from a panoramic sunroof.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a strong contender in the compact SUV market, offering exceptional practicality with its rare seven-seat configuration and industry-leading MBUX infotainment system. Whilst it trails the Audi Q3, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and BMW X1 in overall CarGurus ratings, it delivers superior space and technology. The GLB is best suited to family buyers prioritising practicality over driving dynamics or off-road capability. Its premium badge ensures strong retained values, helping to keep running costs competitive despite higher purchase prices. For those seeking a practical, technology-rich family SUV, the GLB represents an excellent choice.

3.8 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Great car plenty of kit on Prem Plus , plenty of power if you need it with only 1300 petrol which keeps insurance low Great space for families and the dog
I only had a short test drive, but the car is very comfortable, spacious and ultra modern inside. It drives well and is quiet and refined. If your looking for a smallish 7 seater, it needs to be on your list.
Small engine for that big body and noise inside the cabin and it’s Merc why they have lowered their standarts and why there’s no pipes hanging out fake Merc
Good family car. Good price for mercedes 7 seater.
