Good small SUV, the 220d engine felt correct for the car. Interior fittings more SUV than limo., but liveable. Did not buy as rear seats are too hard for my intended use.

I only had a short test drive, but the car is very comfortable, spacious and ultra modern inside. It drives well and is quiet and refined. If your looking for a smallish 7 seater, it needs to be on your list.

Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressive practicality and space | Panoramic sunroof reduces headroom |
| Seven seats when most rivals have five | Not as capable off road as a Land Rover Discovery Sport |
| Wow-factor of MBUX infotainment system | The AMG model is a bit OTT |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-present) is a premium compact SUV that prioritises practicality and space over style. Built on the same platform as the A-Class and GLA-Class, the GLB offers an upright, functional design with seven seats—a rare commodity in its class. The third-row seats stow beneath the boot floor when not needed, providing flexibility for families. With a choice of petrol and diesel engines, including the high-performance Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4Matic, the GLB delivers competent, pragmatic driving with excellent ride quality and responsive handling.
The GLB's standout feature is its acclaimed MBUX infotainment system, which replaces conventional instrumentation with configurable touchscreens and intuitive controls. Running costs are reasonable for a premium badge, with diesel models achieving up to 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions from 148g/km. All-wheel drive (4Matic) is available, though the GLB is less capable off-road than rivals like the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Insurance groups range from 27-30 for the GLB 200 to group 41 for the AMG variant. A plug-in hybrid variant is expected in 2021/22.
Best for: Family buyers seeking seven-seat practicality, premium technology, and space in a compact footprint; those valuing the MBUX infotainment system and retained resale values.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising off-road capability, those seeking a stylish coupe-like design, or those concerned about the AMG model's excessive performance credentials.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.9% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.7% | 4.5/5 |
| BMW X1 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the GLB-Class if: You're a family buyer seeking seven-seat practicality, premium technology, and space in a compact footprint, or you value the acclaimed MBUX infotainment system and strong resale values.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise off-road capability, seek a stylish coupe-like design, or require a more affordable compact SUV option.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a strong contender in the premium compact SUV segment, offering exceptional practicality with seven seats—a rare advantage over rivals. Its MBUX infotainment system is class-leading, and running costs are reasonable for a premium badge. Whilst the Land Rover Discovery Sport offers superior off-road capability and the Audi Q3 provides more style, the GLB's combination of space, technology, and family-focused design makes it an excellent choice for those prioritising practicality. The BMW X1 offers similar appeal but with less interior versatility.
