Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of space in the cabin | Not compatible with CCS charging |
| Affordable for a family EV | Driving position is short on adjustment |
| Extremely cheap to run | Many rivals will go further on a full charge |
Quick Summary
The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024), the second-generation model, represents a significant step forward from its pioneering predecessor. With sharp, modern styling that doesn't deliberately stand out from conventional hatchbacks, the Leaf offers a practical family electric car with excellent interior space and a generous 435-litre boot—more than you'll find in a Ford Focus. The 148bhp electric motor delivers healthy acceleration at town speeds whilst remaining comfortable on motorways, and the standard e-pedal setting allows one-pedal driving for increased range recovery. Available with a 40kWh battery (168-mile range) or larger 62kWh battery (239-mile range), the Leaf provides affordable electric motoring with competitive finance and purchase offers.
Running costs are exceptionally low, with charging costing around 5p per mile on standard domestic tariffs, plus £0 VED road tax and free entry into London Congestion and ULEZ zones. Servicing is affordable at Nissan dealers, with fixed-price packages available. However, the Leaf lacks CCS rapid charging compatibility—using the older CHAdeMO standard—and its driving position offers limited adjustment, which may frustrate taller drivers. Whilst newer competitors offer longer ranges and better charging infrastructure compatibility, the Leaf remains a sensible, safe, and accessible choice for budget-conscious electric car buyers seeking practicality and low running costs.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical family electric car, those prioritising low running costs and cabin space, and drivers with access to home charging facilities.
Not ideal for: Long-distance motorway drivers, those requiring maximum range between charges, or buyers needing CCS rapid charging compatibility or extensive driving position adjustment.

The Verdict
You should buy the Leaf if: You're seeking an affordable family electric car with excellent interior space, low running costs, and access to home charging facilities.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum range between charges, CCS rapid charging compatibility, or extensive driving position adjustment options.
Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) is a sensible and accessible choice in the electric family hatchback class, offering great interior space, decent standard equipment, and competitive pricing. Whilst newer competitors like the Kia e-Niro offer superior range and charging infrastructure, and the Renault Zoe provides a more affordable entry point, the Leaf remains a worthy option for budget-conscious buyers. Its main advantage lies in availability and affordability compared to longer-range alternatives, though it's best suited to drivers with home charging access and modest daily mileage requirements. The Leaf represents a safe, practical, and economical choice for those prioritising low running costs over maximum range.

3.9 Overall rating
(6 reviews)The leaf is a great vehicle, well built, sturdy, quiet with all the requisite features you want or need in a car. The range is good, and best of all you can charge it at home
Very comfortable seats. Smooth driving experience. Limited range below 200miles
It should be remembered that the Leaf is on its second generation model and has sold nearly half a million. It may be short on chargeable miles, but has 10 years of construction/usage behind it. It has plenty of room, is well equipped and has good performance, with a very good reputation for reliability. Because of this, it stands alone in the market place and is a steal on the second-hand market.
Battery capacity is a big problem. with full heating on and driving for 1.7 miles, the range just dropped by 14 miles! Not great to use in cold countries even for short trips. Mileage anxiety will be a constant stress. Otherwise, the car drives fantastic!
For me all of the New feature that the driver wants it is all in this model! Excellent Car !
