Nissan Leaf (2011-2016) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
A true electric car pioneer	Very short range of early cars
Cheap to buy and run	Cheap-looking and dated interior
Very reliable	Lacks the kerbside appeal of a Renault Zoe

Quick Summary

The Nissan Leaf (2011-2016) was the first affordable pure electric hatchback, offering zero tailpipe emissions and substantial tax and fuel savings. The mk1 Leaf is now one of the cheapest ways into a used electric car, with batteries proving extremely robust—many examples exceed 150,000 miles. Whilst range diminishes over time, early models delivering around 60 miles are suitable for short commutes, whilst 2013 upgrades offered 80 miles and 2015's 30kWh battery extended this to approximately 100 miles. The five-door design provides good safety standards and a boot spacious enough for family needs, though the fixed steering wheel reach and high-set seat may frustrate taller drivers.

Running costs are remarkably low at around 5p per mile when charged at home, with servicing costing just £100–£150 annually. Charging takes up to 10 hours from a domestic socket, though a government-subsidised home wall box reduces this to five hours with the optional 6.6kWh on-board charger. CHAdeMO rapid charging (available from 2013) provides 20–80% battery top-up in approximately 30 minutes, though this technology is becoming less common as manufacturers shift to CCS sockets. The Leaf excels as an affordable, reliable daily runabout for those with home charging and modest driving needs, though its dated interior, limited range, and modest styling lack the appeal of rivals like the Renault Zoe or BMW i3.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable electric car for short commutes and school runs, those with home charging facilities, and environmentally conscious drivers prioritising low running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers requiring long-range capability, those without home charging access, or buyers seeking premium interior quality or striking design appeal.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Leaf if: You're seeking an affordable entry into electric motoring, have home charging facilities, and primarily need a reliable car for short commutes and family errands.

Consider alternatives if: You require long-range capability, lack home charging access, or prioritise premium interior quality and striking design appeal.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2011-2016) remains one of the most affordable used electric cars available, offering exceptional value and running costs. Whilst it lacks the kerbside appeal of the Renault Zoe and the premium feel of the BMW i3, its proven reliability, low purchase price, and minimal running expenses make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers. The Hyundai IONIQ offers superior ratings and more modern technology, but at a higher cost. For those prioritising affordability and practicality over style and range, the Leaf represents outstanding value in the used EV market.
