Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Lots of space in the cabin Not compatible with CCS charging
Affordable for a family EV Driving position is short on adjustment
Extremely cheap to run Many rivals will go further on a full charge

Quick Summary

The second-generation Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) presented a modern, family-friendly electric hatchback with eye-catching yet conventional styling. It offers excellent practicality, featuring a spacious 435-litre boot and ample passenger room, surpassing many rivals in interior volume. While the steering wheel lacks reach adjustment, the Leaf is remarkably easy to drive, providing comfortable and safe journeys with its 148bhp electric motor delivering strong acceleration.

Initially available with a 40kWh battery offering 168 miles (WLTP), a 62kWh 'e+' model later extended the range to 239 miles. Running costs are exceptionally low, benefiting from cheap charging and tax incentives. All models come well-equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, and essential safety features. However, its reliance on CHAdeMO rapid charging and comparative efficiency to some newer EVs are points to consider, especially for longer trips.

Best for: Drivers seeking an affordable electric family hatchback with good interior space and low running costs, or commuters looking for a comfortable and easy-to-drive EV.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising long-distance touring due to CHAdeMO charging and potentially shorter real-world range, taller drivers needing extensive driving position adjustment, or those who prefer the more common CCS charging standard.

The Verdict

You should buy the Leaf if: You're seeking an affordable electric family hatchback with good interior space and low running costs, or a commuter looking for a comfortable and easy-to-drive EV.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise long-distance touring due to CHAdeMO charging and potentially shorter real-world range, you're a taller driver needing extensive driving position adjustment, or you prefer the more common CCS charging standard.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) is a strong contender in the electric family hatchback segment, offering impressive interior space, good standard equipment, and excellent affordability. It stands out for its lower purchase prices and shorter waiting lists compared to some rivals. While it excels in everyday practicality and cost-effectiveness, its use of CHAdeMO charging and slightly lower range/efficiency than segment leaders like the Kia e-Niro means it's often a sensible choice for those prioritising value and availability, even if newer competitors have surpassed it in some technological aspects.

It should be remembered that the Leaf is on its second generation model and has sold nearly half a million. It may be short on chargeable miles, but has 10 years of construction/usage behind it. It has plenty of room, is well equipped and has good performance, with a very good reputation for reliability. Because of this, it stands alone in the market place and is a steal on the second-hand market.

Battery capacity is a big problem. with full heating on and driving for 1.7 miles, the range just dropped by 14 miles! Not great to use in cold countries even for short trips. Mileage anxiety will be a constant stress. Otherwise, the car drives fantastic!

feels great to have an electric car - however the 24 kilowatt models ( older pre 2017 models) - only do about 105 miles per charge & a charge ising home socket- takes all night ( 8 hours)- & a fast 2 hour charge can degrade the battery- which provides power fir the motor. All in all - best electric cars are the newer ones which can do over 200 miles per charge- so its swings & roundabouts for the 24 kw & 30 kw motor electric vehicles- but they are perfect for mini cab drivers.
